    Example:

Singer/rapper of a rap metal band: When we were making the first BANDNAME record. They (major label) said "I dunno about the rapping, maybe you should just be a pure rock band". They signed as an act of what we sound like and they're like: "I dunno maybe you should just play keyboard"

    haha

I guess the main reason would be to have control on who you are and what you play as a band or artist. Pero naa man pud labels na maayo, like Fueled by Ramen and Tooth and Nail...

@shoeless_rebel ug r/brey:kuyaw sad 2 inyung mga points dah. u both presented very valid points, dili lang jud magmeet mo. At least ni acknowledge mo na naa say kasak2han ninyo.

Lemme share: to a certain, it is but normal that musicians want to share their music to a certain audience. Ang blema with being in major label is that artists are required to meet the bottom line, which is to sell records. IN that way, nahimong COMMODITY na ang music. I think Kurt Cobain and Nirvana is perfect poster boy/s for this. They had a cult following na sa underground, and they decided to sign with a major label since they wanted to reach a wider audience. He was even quoted as saying:

"You don't have to sell your soul and sign with a major label". (or something close to that. you get the point.lolz)

They thought they would just sell a couple of hundred thousand records and they'd be fine. The next thing they were in the top 10 and selling millions of records. That really got into Kurt since what he considered as "personal" has been embraced by a whole generation.
He wanted out since this was not he signed up for. 3 years after their major label debut, he killed himself.

Can you guys see the irony in all of this?

Q:Why play in front of people when you can just play among yourselves?
A:Because we want people to listen, but it doesn't say we want to be on a major label and sell records. There's a fine line between these things. I play for the love of music. But when you play in gigs and record albums, you do it for other people. It doesn't matter kung underground or mainstream na mo, but the bottom line is:

YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE EXACTLY WHO SHOULD AND WHO WOULD LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC.

Mao na ang mga taga underground wary ani. They want to do things their way. Kay if you want to sell, you should appeal to the majority, the masses. It has nothing to do with "being cool" or what not. The underground bands and the ppl who listen to them don't necessarily fall into the stereotyped mainstream. They do things their way, and most of the time dili na ang prescribed sa mainstream. That's the way it works jud.

Naa juy mga maayo na underground bands na deserving sa attention but they'd rather not go major. IT's a matter of principle raman sad. Naa say uban na naningkamot jud na makagawas sa underground, mao na mu-"sell out" cla, ilaha sad na. Naa say mga walay suwerte, wrong timing lang or kulang sa exposure, nagpabilin lang sa underground when they really deserved to be appreciated by many.

But for me, music is an art form, not a commodity. If people would like it, that's fine. If not, the hell with them. Unless I want to be the next Cueshe. lolz

Interviewer: Would you jump to a major?
Band member: We talked to a few. We had a bunch of majors trying to buy us off of our current (independent) label. They offered us tons of money, like over a million dollars. They would always come to our shows and be really weird and like, “You can do whatever you want, we're going to give you all this money” and we're like “You're not going to do that. Have you seen us play? Have you heard our stuff? There's no way you'll give us that much money to let us do this.” They'd always be like “Yeah, yeah, that's fine” but finally, the closer we started to get to signing papers, they'd try to pull sh*t on you. “Here's the deal, you have to tone down when you play live, someone's going to get hurt and we're going to get sued.” I was just like, “What?” We talked to Universal and they said they wanted to bring in hit writers, they were going to bring in the guys who write songs for, like, Disturbed, to make sure that WE have a hit on your record.

@[GjB629]: Lage bai, actual interview kuno na. Dili lang ko mu-conclude dayon kay wala biya ko pag-interview hehe... But if that would be the case, why not make those HIT MAKERS the stars? Maybe then they'll try to "BRING IN" the "move-makers" to make sure those guys have the "cool" moves? Hahaha...

An Intro from a certain bands' DVD release; only the audio was playing during the said intro and this is what one of the band members commented on:

When we started playing in a band, it was all about just: You're in a band and you write songs to have fun. The minute you sign a record deal, it seems like all the fun is stripped away. You start like analyzing the music in a different way. You don't listen to it for the enjoyment of listening to it. You don't play it for the enjoyment of playing. Y'know like they'd call you up and say "Hey y'know did you hear this new record, maybe you should write something like this. Well, we're not that f****n' band. This is who we are. This is what we're going to be and if you don't like it, f*** yourself.

    *Can't please everyone... Hehehe...
