    At the same time, it will force make Cagiuoa change his game and find other ways to fit in to the new system. I expect a much deadlier Mark Cagiuoa in any FIBA sanctioned tournament next time.

    Alaska finally breaks in to the win column while Purefoods remained as the only unbeaten team so far.

    Veteran guard Jeffrey Cariaso scored game high 22 points, 11 in the fourth quarter, as he led the Alaska Aces to it's first win after losing it's first two games in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup. Alaska overcame a 76-83 deficit to a 90-88 lead before Coca-Cola center Ali Peek tied the score at 90-all. Guards Mike Cortez and Willie Miller both sank in two charities to give Alaska a 94-90 lead before John Arigo made two of his own trimming the lead down to 94-92. Reynel Hugnatan turned the ball over in the next possession before Alaska took the ball back after rookie Ronjay Buenafe turned it over. Hugnatan added 17 points for Alaska while Cortez and Miller had 16 and 11 respectively. Miller entered the game averaging 34 points in his first two games.

    On the other game, Purefoods relied on a fiery second half as they handed the powerhouse Magnolia Beverage Masters it's first loss in the tourney. James Yap and rookie Chico Lanete fueled a decisive Purefoods run in the second half, overcoming Magnolia's 17 point first half lead. Yap, the reigning POW awardee, scored 25 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while Lanete had 16 points, scoring 12 in the third quarter, for Purefoods. Lordy Tugade led Magnolia with 23 points while Enrico Villanueva added 16. Danny Seigle and Danny Ildefonso both finished with 12 points apiece while Dondon Hontiveros added 11. Purefoods' guard Roger Yap was slapped with a flagrant foul and was sent out of the game after hitting Magnolia's LA Tenorio on the ribcage. Another key to Purefoods' victory is their rebounding. Magnolia was badly outrebounded in the game.

    The newly-implemented PBA rules has not just made the games a lot faster, exciting, and rougher, it also made it miserable for players to shoot. So far, no team has hit at least 50% FGs in a game and the Talk 'N Text PhonePals made the best shooting in a game with 49.4% against Ginebra.

    FG Shooting percentage:

    1.) Magnolia --> 44.5%
    2.) Alaska --> 44.33%
    3.) Talk 'N Text --> 43.25%
    4.) Air21 --> 42.5%
    4.) Ginebra --> 42.5%
    6.) Purefoods --> 40.33%
    7.) Red Bull --> 40%
    8.) Coca-Cola --> 38.66%
    8.) Sta. Lucia --> 38.66%
    10.) Welcoat --> 32%

    One more reason for Cebuanos to be proud of. Junthy Valenzuela of the Red Bull Barakos was named the PBA's Accel-Smart Player of the Week for Oct. 22-28. Valenzuela, known for his stingy defense, came off the bench and scored 27 points in Red Bull's 86-75 win over the Welcoat Dragons, bouncing back from an opening night loss against Ginebra. Aside from his 27 points, Valenzuela finished with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals and was a big factor for the Barakos' defense who limited Welcoat to an erratic 32/87 FG shooting (36.8%).

    Valenzuela edged out Jeffrey Cariaso of Alaska, first week POW winner James Yap of Purefoods, Paolo Mendoza of Sta. Lucia, and Magnolia's Lordy Tugade.
