Unlike the Zamboanga siege which were not as well rooted. If you saw the images of the fire-arms, they have top-notch weapons. They have RPGs that can be used against our army.
Personal opinion, Marawi is really hard to take over. Maute can use different methods to move in and out and provide reinforcements anytime since it is surrounded by land. With so many access to the city, it is harder to contain. Smaller city and more access makes it harder to take over. Since it is smaller, the Maute can easily coordinate and is not too spread out. They can easily move from location to location to reinforce places that needs reinforcements. Thus, making it harder to count the number of enemies left or if there were reinforcements.
If you are familiar with RTS games, you would know it is harder to take down a concentrated defense area compared to a spread out defense. Same concept.
Also, regarding Obama being in Iraq. That was incomparable. America is fighting a war on a different country. Our army is fighting a war within our Country. Of course it helps to be there to give morale to your troops.
And another note, not calling this a terrorist act is like saying Hontiveros was correct. Maute waived the flag of ISIS. Swearing allegiance to a terrorist group makes them a terrorist.
