DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Philippines—Negros Oriental Governor Agustin Perdices succumbed to stomach cancer at the St. Luke's Global City shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. He was 76.
Perdices served as Dumaguete City mayor for 19 years before he was elected as Negros Oriental vice governor last May 2010. But as fate would have it, he was thrust to the governorship with the death of Governor Emilio Macias II last June 13. Macias died of complications from liver cancer.
Perdices shocked Negrenses when he announced last November that he had stomach cancer, barely five months since he assumed the governorship from an elected governor who died of liver cancer.
Perdices’ doctors recommended that he undergo 12 chemotherapy sessions. He was about to have his seventh session when his condition suddenly worsened last Monday.
Lawyer Neil Ray Lagahit, Dumaguete City Legal Officer and Perdices' legal adviser for 10 years, said Perdices was surrounded by his family and trusted aide Harrison Gonzales at his bedside.

Rest in Peace to our beloved Governor: Governor Agustin Perdices.
He was the mayor of Dumaguete City for a very lone time, i remember when our family moved to the city of gentle people he was already the mayor. I lost count on how many times he was elected, I think he never loss. He was loved by many Dumagueteño and Negrense. He will surely be missed. I'm really sad with this news.I'm a very proud Dumagueteño and part of that pride comes from all his works.
R.I.P..Thanks for everything Mr. Governor.
...Perdices’ remains will arrive in Dumaguete on Friday afternoon on board a commercial Philippine Airlines flight and his burial will be at 12 high noon on January 11, Acting Governor Roel Degamo said.
It was not immediately known where his remains will be brought upon arrival in Dumaguete but it is expected to be at the Capitol, he being the governor of Negros Oriental.
Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said he is also hoping that the remains will lie in wake at the city session hall considering that it was in Dumaguete that Perdices had served for so long a time as a political leader and public servant.
