Have read a Dean Koontz book (w/c I forgot the title) and looks to me that it has some similarity with Stephen King's work..They have the (in some ways) same topic like involving writers/authors in a state of fascination towards their characters to the extent of putting them into life as themselves..

but I think Stephen King has been around for sometime..his book, I remember was made into movies since late 70's..take "Carrie" starring the then young Sissy Spacek and John Travolta as a supporting role..I doubt if "Rage Carrie" (the sequel) was also based on Stephen King's book..

All I can say is that both authors have pretty eerie imaginations that my friend stopped reading a Koontz book bec. it gave her nightmares??!?..

Koonts is wayy to underrated, I read his book MIDNIGHT and MIDNIGHT is definitely one of Koontz's novels that contains a lot of cliffhanger sequences and gross-out moments for the squeamish to ever take. I loved the charm of Chrissie Foster's bookish, intelligent and articulate beyond her years character. Fact is I think the young Dakota Fanning is whom I picture if this was produced into a movie... in the beginnign you will read a lot of suspenseful sequences such as inside the tunnel or when she seeks the aid of a Godiva the horse...I liked Tessa's cheerfulness in direct contrast to the pessimism of Sam Booker, the book's main character. There are walls between Sam and his son as a backstory, brought about by Sam's lack of insightfulness in savoring what is beautiful in life. But the experiences they encounter would only shake Sam and he would face the truth, near death while standing on dirty waters. Plus there is a repetitive reiteration of the four sings Sam would like to live for: Guiness Stout, Mexican Food, Goldie Hawn and the Fear of Death. He would realize there's more than four in the later part of the story. The struggling officer who has undergone the "Change" - Loman Watkins also experiences his character arc when he finds himself willing to destroy the villaneous Thomas Shaddack, a twisted and delusional antagonist, and Watkins because of what Shaddack has made him is willing to end the events going haywire at Moonlight Cove. Let me just make a comparison, Sam's character I can compare to that of Dan Haldane from Koontz's THE DOOR TO DECEMBER, while Haldane wasn't as pessimistic a person both encounter their own character arcs where Haldane learns that forgetting is the beginning of the path to healing, Booker learns that living with regret can only hinder one from experiencing the beauty before him and the hideous encounters at Moonlight Cove only provide the feeling of repulsion necessary for him to recognize the things he mostly took for granted. Harry Talbot, the Nam veteran is ever hopeful and gallant, wait for the thrilling scene in the Attic towards the end. A man who has put a lid on his abilities to virtually perform voyeur all over town, yet a man in the yearning of family and reaching out. Let's not forget about Moose the dog too whom you WILL feel for in a certain scene in the third part of the book.

There is also a weird and disgusting event that takes place to three characters whom we first encounter at the beginning, when they merge into one protean beast and sing a seductive animal cry to cause prey to walk towards them. In the end, of course there is denouement and the earth shattering experiences of the characters in Moonlight Cove, especially to the ever endearing Chrissie only make little interpersonal struggles seem of little ado, even to the point when she giggles when she is exposed to a rather profane confrontation towards the end. Unlike THE DOOR TO DECEMBER, Midnight has no surprise ending, remember when Haldane first discovered what "It?" was in that other Koontz book? But as in most of Koontz's work, the importance of faith, hope, love and living life and seeing it's worht and beauty will be given to you as denouement and after being put through an incredible, and sometimes very thrilling even unpleasant ordeal, accept the heartwarming elation Koontz will give you afterward. Yes, I am telling you this but nothing here will spoil you, specifically. Just pick up the book, and get ready for the ride.

    His other books,

    DARKFALL
    THE DOOR TO DECEMBER

    I have also read...

Koontz is definitely one of those authors who creates damn entertaining and fast reads.....

Being the 4th Koontz book I read yet, LIGHTNING was the one that had held me most spellbound and in awe.
The story, as any story should begins where Laura Shane is conceived and we are treated to glimpses of Stefan -
the mysterious guardian of Laura. Koontz even puts the Random House definition of "Roller Coaster" as one of the opening
title cards and rightly so as we are swept through time between Laura's miraculous rescue from the guardian
in the grocery store, to her eery encounters with the villain in the McIlroy home. Koontz foreshadows Laura's wit
and love for words and strong bonding with Thelma Ackerson; a person whom she would develop a lasting friendship and
even a sisterhood. You will also be taken in by the endearing charm and wisdom beyond her years that Laura displays in her youth.

As Laura overcomes the eventful traumas that precede her adolescence, Koontz flashforwards us to how Laura meets
her husband and father of her young boy, Chris. As a prelude to those happy years to come including the rise of Laura
from a struggler to a successful novelist; side by side with Thelma's triumph as a comedian and actress - Koontz even manages
to creep his readers with a spooky gag involving toads. In between those events is an elaborate shift of temporal
displacement in the storyline that precedes Laura's encounter with her guardian angel 20 years LATER.
After an unexpected turn in Laura's life in the snowy highway, that is when we are treated to scenes of Laura being
the ultimate heroine getting ready to arm herself with the strongest defenses; at which point her friend Thelma
even expresses alarm albeit with the comic relief she always integrates with it.
The Second Part of the book appropriately named "Pursuit." is jam packed with action scenes, revelations, reflections and nightmares many of which center on the entity called: Fate or Destiny. Laura discovers the identity of her guardian,
and the unexpected response about the truth of his origins and the broken life which he lived. We also discover his
intentions for making Laura a personal crusade, correcting the tragedies that were ordained by fate. Layer by layer, this chilling
tale unravels itself towards extravagant scope and in the book's finale intercuts again with temporal displacement in a thrilling
duel with Laura protecting her young boy and Stefan, her guardian fixing things in a distant time and place while meeting TWO very important people; you just have to pick up the book as I won't divulge the details of that here.
The complications leading to the conclusion of Koontz's yarn combine suspense with the novel's malignant touch tapping into your psyche making you reflect on the things that Laura, the novel's heroine would.Â* There is an almost unbearable magnitude of nerve-racking tension when the story takes a dive into darkness, which contrasts the triumphs that have been achieved by Laura Shane in the middle of her life as a novelist, a wife, and a mother. From eery and mysterious and atmospheric thrills to the far end that contains revelations of gargantuan proportions, LIGHTNING will keep the reader mesmerized all through out and fascinated with the way Koontz has weaved the life-story of Laura Shane and it will NOT disappoint. Brimming with one-liners and punch-lines here and there, LIGHTNING is a reading experience you won't forget, with characters you will love whether you have been a seasoned reader of Koontz or not. Exotic news indeed.

Not only does King write scare books. His non horror works are also superb. ex. Shawshank Redemption (read the book and saw the movie), The Green Mile, Dolores Claiborne, Misery.
