Hello!

Philippine History from the FMA Warrior’s Perspective (1890-1899).

    1890 –

Creation of municipalities in Christian provinces.

Dec: Jose Rizal publishes the El Filibusterismo (The Subversive), a sequel to the Noli Me Tangere.

    1891 –

The Manila-Dagupan railway was opened to traffic.

    1892 –

Jun: Rizal returned to the Philippines after a brief stay in Hong Kong where his family was exiled for Rizal's activities; founded La Liga Filipina, a nationalist organization to promote liberal demands; exiled to Dapitan upon order of Spanish Governor Eulogio Despujol.

2 Jul: Andres Bonifacio founded the secret society called The Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (The Exalted and Most Honorable Society of the Sons of the People) – or Katipunan (Brotherhood) in Tondo, Manila. The Katipunan was concerned with one thing: complete separation from Spain by way of revolution. To do this it gathered the popular fanatical support of some 200,000 Filipinos and trained them in the basic techniques of eskrima.

    1893 –

    1894 –

    1895 –

    The Marawi (Lanao) campaign against the Muslims in Mindanao by the Spaniards;

First arrival of the Benedictine friars in the Philippines.

    1896 –

The Katipunan brought about the Philippine Revolution from 1896-1898. Andres Bonifacio brandished a bolo while initiating the Katipunan revolutionary movement against Spain.

19 Aug: The Katipunan was discovered by the Spanish authorities. Governor Blanco banishes 400 suspected members. Spanish vigilantes panicked and killed hundreds of Filipinos.

29 Aug: Start of the Katipunan Revolt through Bonifacio's Cry of Pugadlawin and Balintawak openly declaring war against Spain.

30 Aug: The set date for the Philippine Revolution.

28 Dec: Jose Rizal was found guilty of having caused the Philippine Revolution by way of his novels and the society La Liga Filipina.

30 Dec: Dr. Jose P. Rizal, arms tied, was sentenced to be shot in the back by a firing squad in Bagumbayan Field, now called Luneta. This was done in hopes of suppressing further revolutionary actions with Rizal as an example. Being shot in the back was the mark of a traitor and Rizal, who felt he had never committed treason, quickly turned and faced the firing squad just as they fired. Contrary to the intentions of the Spanish, the death of Rizal was the single factor that united all natives across the length of the Philippines to unite in the revolt against Spain.

    1897 –

10 May: Bonifacio and his brother, Procopio, because of the internal war in the Katipunan, were captured by the men of General Emilio Aguinaldo and executed for treason.

Dec: Aguinaldo signed a truce with Spain and accepted voluntary exile in Hongkong.

    1898 –

15 Feb: Stray artillery coming from the Spanish armaments “accidentally” sunk the American warship, Maine, anchored in Havana Harbor.

25 Apr: Outraged by the death of nearly 250 American servicemen, the American Congress declared a state of war between US and Spain

1 May: Commodore George Dewey led the U.S. Asiatic Squadron into Manila Bay. Spotting the Spanish Armada arrayed off the coast of Cavite, the Spanish-American War began.

12 Jun: INDEPENDENCE DAY. Philippines declares Independence from Spain; a constitutional government is established. General Emilio Aguinaldo becomes the 1st President of the Philippines. He served his term until March 1901 when he was captured by the Americans.

July - Emilio Aguinaldo established a republican government thru the Pact of Biak-na-Bato

Aug: Spanish authorities surrendered Manila to the Americans. After sinking the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay and occupying the City, American forces found their advance blocked by massive trench works manned by thirty thousand troops loyal to the infant Philippine Republic.

10 Dec: The Treaty of Paris was then signed by the United States and Spain. The terms of the treaty left the United States as the new “proprietor” of the Philippines, having purchased it from Spain for twenty million dollars. General Aguinaldo supported the treaty because it was predicated on the promise that the rule of the archipelago would immediately be ceded to the Filipinos.

    1899 –

23 Jan: Since the United States had promised immediate independence of the Philippines and reneged, General Emilio Aguinaldo declared the establishment of the Republic of the Philippines.

4 Feb: Angered by America’s continued occupation of the archipelago, Aguinaldo and his troops again took up arms for freedom and initiated the Filipino-American War.

Feb: The US Army broke through the Filipino fortifications and marched North into the Central Luzon plain, driving General Aguinaldo’s Army before it.

Nov: The US Army had smashed Philippine defenses and forced Aguinaldo into the mountains, where he ordered his commanders to commence guerrilla warfare.
