Lets put the muslim extremists aside.
It has a greater effect in individual lives coz the faith in God is what shapes our thinking and molds our personality! just like you desiring to understand the universe through scientific means, thats faith in science! the advantage of the martyrs is the promise of eternal life by the one who resurrected from the dead himself....how about yours?

Science on the other hand change our lives and - for the better. And the good thing is: I don't need to explain it to you. No cryptic message no bulshitting.
I agree and consider that believing in God while pursuing science is not a hindrance at all, in fact it guides your quest in a right and honest manner, dili ka mangilad!

There are lots of scientists migo who are believers of God and they lead a better lives!

Naay gitawag ug catholic christianity (before constantine) and imperial christianity (after the "alleged" conversion of constantine), then the cristendom, protestant reformation, rennaisance..., great revival...and so on.

Catholic age (AD70- AD312) Christians have no divisions during this time but went underground for worship. The empire was puzzled for their zeal and courage in standing for the faith and in proclaiming the gospel. Thousands of Martyrs being put to death.
Imperial Christianity (AD313 - AD590) This is the time rome legalized christianity and embraced it as a state religion. Constantine being a pagan emperor merged paganism and christianity.
Age of Cristendom (590-1570AD) Christianity was being politicized and the start of the crusades and inquisition
Age of Reformation (15++AD - 16++AD) There are different waves of reformation starting from J.Wycliffe until Martin Luther who has the greatest impact that shook the whole of Europe.

Later came war and constant bloodshed between Rome and those who opposed its teachings for 30 years then the agreement of peace in Westphalia been established. From then onwards, the freedom to choose religion was tolerated.

Then the arisal of denominations first happen in europe....

Emperor Constantine was one of the tetrarchs (4 Roman Emperors ruling at the same time assigned to 4 parts of the empire). He ruled Roman Britain during the time of Diocletian. Although he did not participate in the persecution nor he imposed the imperial edict in Britain, he did not oppose it until his Christian conversion on the eve of the Battle of Milvian Bridge.

Empress Helena of Constantinople, Christian, beloved wife and mother of Constantine -- she is the reason why Constantine's father and Constantine did not implement the Christian persecution in Britain, and eventually throughout the Roman Empire.
She is the one who encouraged Constantine to eventually accept Christianity and legalize its status throughout the Roman world.
Not bad having a Christian in the family.

The Ponte Milvio in Rome. The site of struggle between 2 emperors Maxentius (supporter of Mithraism) and Constantine (Christian). One might have wondered what could have been the fate of Christianity if the result could have been different.
