MANILA - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources insisted Friday that no law was violated when it allowed garbage from Canada to be disposed in the Philippines.
The DENR said the Canada garbage was initially declared as scrap plastic when it arrived in the country's ports in July 2013 but was later discovered to be waste.
It said that after careful study, an inter-agency committee decided to just dispose the waste in the Tarlac landfill instead of pursuing legal action against canada.
The DENR said the Basel Convention, an international treaty that was designed to reduce the movements of hazardous waste between nations, does not prohibit bilateral discussion between countries to resolve a dispute.
