Origin of the name of Cebu:

    3 possibilities:

Sugbo-means torched earth. The settlement was referred to in the past as "Kang Sri Lumayng Sugbo" because when Sri Lumay once governed the place, he ordered the houses in his village burned down to dissuade Moro pirates from pillaging the place.

Zubu-means the main part of the bolo, the blade which protrudes from its handle. Probably refers to the shape of the island which resembles one. Common in Spanish-era maps of the Philippines

Sibo- shortened from "dapit sa sinibo-ayng hingpit" which literally meant "place of ultimate (or great) trade" referring to the place as a major trading place.

    (From various sources)
