To quote Lee Kuan Yew: "Only in the Philippines could a leader like Ferdinand Marcos, who pillaged his country for over twenty years, still be considered for a national burial. Insignificant amounts of the loot have been recovered, yet his wife and children were allowed to return and engage in politics.”
I'm not a fan of every President that has come and gone in the Philippines. If you asked me, I'd rather we did not pursue independence from the Americans too soon. We were too arrogant for our own good. Every President since then just made things worse and worse.
To quote Lee again: "In the 1950s and 1960s, [the Philippines] was the most developed, because America had been generous in rehabilitating the country after the war."
Sigh.
