best place to study Computer Science here in Cebu

i'm an Education graduate with an ample background of CS/IT from my previous jobs and intense self-study. i'd like to take Computer Science and maybe a Master's degree. i just wanted to follow what i really want to do in life. so please help me in finding a good school.

my first choice for now is UP's open university distance learning mode. but maybe there are good schools here. what i meant by good is really competent teachers and intensive practical training that you can use in the real-world.

wa na sa skwelahan.. bisan asa as long university kung mga maayo pana manudlo ang mga instructor diha wa na mag-antos ug tudlo.. kana lang affordable nga skwelahan nya imong extra money ipalit na ug pc nga nindot + internet connection for research.. ayaw tuo anang nindot nga uniform sa mahalon nga skwelahan..

challenging doesn't mean her teaching is good. i've known CS students who underwent her classes and i know it's not really helpful at all.

i studied and worked at USC-TC before while i was still a student. i have worked with USC CS studs who only knew C, VB, Java, and Oracle. guess it's the only training they got. please correct me if i'm wrong. i hope the profs at USC has already upgraded their curriculum but I don't know. even the IT program is not good.

I dont know about you, but when you said "who only knew C" is an understatement,
in programming you just need to know one language since switching from language to language is just a semantics like syntax different or what not. it is how you use your programming skill in any language that matter.
ive been doing programming for more than decade that is jumping from platform to platform including from firmware to games to web application to web games to mobile and i only have C as a training. and when i say i made and program games, I DO NOT use 3rd party engines. this is because of my training and exposure to basic languages like C and C++ that allows me to adopt to any modern platforms that is fairly "easy".
What USCTC and Mrs. Pena will teach you is not the language but it is how to use it and how to use your logic and persistency. as an experienced Engineer and software architect, language do not matter.

that's the main reason i want to take up the course - to get a diploma. i've learned so many things already (particularly on the practical side - things that students don't learn in school). the problem is i can't get a good IT job with only that or even freelance jobs. another reason is i want to learn the theories (things that i didn't learn from self-studying like principles and stuff).

best place? you're right! it would be at my own place.
best school? that's why i posted this discussion. i'd like to hear about feedback from IT people.

right now, i'm into web development (more on the backend side - PHP/MySQL, etc). but i'm wanting to learn cross-platform systems programming in the future. i'm learning Python right now on my own. i'm already bored with VB.

Kung "paper DIPLOMA" ra imo giapas, go for ANY computer related course or post-grad degrees in UP or USC or USJR. If education grad ka, daghan jud sigurong subjects nga ma-credit. So mas shorter na imong pag-schooling this time. Yes, you may say these schools sucked at what they are teaching, but you only need the diploma ra man.

Now, if you really are good in what you do - programming - i dont think nga di nimo makuha ang "good IT job" nga imong giapas. I think it's a matter of diskarte and patience at the same time. Basta maayo jud ka Sir, daghan mag-apas nimo.

And lastly, if ako pa na, if kahibaw ko og programming as good as you or at least 50% as good as you Sir, DILI nako mo-WORK. I can earn man online jud with the sky and my imagination as the limit. (wala ko manghambog but nakita ni nako first-hand jud).

Im an accounting grad employed in the marketing field and im also earning online not as a freelance programmer but as a website owner.

This thread is really old. I started it in the year 2005. A lot has happened since then.

I didn't anymore pursue CS studies (though I want to pursue a Master's in CS someday when time allows). I did freelance work since 2008 and eventually my portfolio and past projects proved that I was qualified enough to work with IT companies. It turns out, most IT companies put more weight in the quality of your projects than on your school degree/grades.

I'm now working fulltime for a Swiss Aeronautics software company and part-time for a US web development company.
