Default Switched meds suspected in stroke victim's death in Cebu

Did a switching of medicines cause the death of a patient at a Cebu hospital on Sunday?

Relatives of patient Gregorio Vega Jr. said he had been responding to treatment at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center until last weekend, GMA Cebu's Chona Carreon reported on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."

The report said Vega's relatives are not discounting the possibility Gregorio, who suffered a stroke, may have been accidentally administered medicine for diabetes, the condition of his sibling Alex who was also admitted at the same hospital.

The hospital's management suggested that Vega's kin lodge a complaint so it can be acted upon.

"Meron talagang strong evidence about sa resulta na nakuha ng kanyang bayaw dahil posible na ibang gamot ang na-administer sa kanila," Vega's widow Dinah said.

"Nagre-respond sana siya nung Thursday pero bigla na lang siya natulala. Tinanong ko ang duktor, sabi niya na dala lang daw yun ng stroke," she added.

But for now, Vega's relatives have no plan yet to pursue legal action against the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health in Central Visayas is waiting for a formal complaint from the relatives as well so it can start an investigation.

"We would recommend that they go to Vicente Sotto and ask the facts, mag-inquire sila, tanungin nila kung anong nangyari. If (are not satisfied), then they can always write a complaint sa Vicente Sotto or sa Department of Health," DOH Region 7 spokesperson Suzette Jabonete said.

There should be a credible source for such allegations? Referring to the Nurses notes or medication records could help. If the mistake for medication error is ruled in, the nurse assigned or health provider who gave the medication is accountable.

Anti diabetic drugs di man cguro maka stroke, in like a short period of time? dpod cguro.

naa man ta ana sir. Infact ang NBI nato, naa man jud silay Medico Legal Division, w/c handles cases such as this. Dra. Fortun is a known one from that department. If sought for help, pwede man na. But again, when our bureaucratic government kicks in. Abtan lang ka ug siyam-siyam.

dili man kinahanglan complex nga examination para mahibaw-an. atong mga big laboratories capable man ani mo generate ug toxicology reports based on blood samples. dapat ila ipa autopsy ang dead body then ipa undergo ug toxicology ang dugo aron mahibaw an ang reason sa kamatayon ug ang mga chemicals nga na administer before the patients death.
