FUENTE Osmeña rotunda will undergo improvement and rehabilitation at no cost to the City or Provincial Government.
Cebu City Mayor Mayor Michael Rama yesterday said Amparito Lhuillier and her family will shoulder the cost of the project.
Rama particularly asked the family to improve the fence and lights in Fuente rotunda and the fountain located at the center of the park.
“The design of the park will jive with Sinulog and other known activities in Cebu,” the mayor said.
During the celebration of the centennial anniversary of the park last February, the City had initially agreed with the Lhullier family to initiate the P13-million facelift and rehabilitation works of the area, but it was not materialized.
This time, however, Rama said that the project will pushed through even with the pending case between the City Government and the Provincial Government on the ownership of the rotunda. Rama said Gov. Hilario Davide III gave the City a go signal to go on with the project.
“I have extended my gratitude to Gov. Davide for agreeing on the project because that represents the whole Cebu,” he said.
In 2007, the Provincial Government claimed the ownership of Fuente Osmeña and demanded
that the City turn over its administration to the Capitol.
Former mayor Tomas Osmeña ignored the demand, prompting the Capitol to file a civil case against the City.
Rama, along with the City’s Park and Playground Commission, the Department of Engineering and Public Works and the members of the Lhullier family already held a meeting about the implementation of the project.
Rama said he also gave the authority for the family to start installing the giant Christmas tree in the park, which the family has been sponsoring for the past years.
Rama said that both the City and the Province should first set aside the case because the Asia Pacific Economic Forum and the International Eucharistic Congress, are coming.
