Mindanao may have set a new world record for the most trees planted simultaneously in multiple locations, based on a Philippine government agency's partial and unofficial tally as of Friday evening.
According to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), precisely 3,373,762 trees had been planted as of 7:53 p.m., the agency said on its website.
It added there were some 183,858 planters.
However, Guinness World Records judges have yet to officially weigh in on the feat.
Earlier Friday, several stakeholders from Mindanao took part in a bid to break the world record for the most trees planted simultaneously in multiple locations.
Dubbed "TreeVolution," the campaign had aimed to plant 4.6 million trees to eclipse the current record of 1.9 million held by India.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, residents from Davao City flocked to some of the planting sites, occasionally causing heavy traffic, RGMA's Raul Tolibas reported on dzBB radio.
In Davao, thousands of participants from the government, police, military, students and religious woke up before dawn to head for the planting sites.
