In the end, it's about one's worldview and our choice of epistemology or how we know what we know. Do we put our faith in science as the best method to understand the universe? Or do we need to add religion to plug the gaps in our understanding?
While atheism is the lack of belief in a God, atheists may differ in the reasons for their position. There are those who don't believe in a god but believe in New Age, occultism, and other superstitious mumbo jumbo. There are those who don't believe in a god just as a sign of protest or rebellion or a fashion statement or just riding on a fad. Then there are those who dismissed their religious beliefs after honestly applying critical thinking on the dogmas and tenets that they grew up believing. I hope that last statement holds true for the atheists out there.
Yes, even as a non-religious person, I do hold beliefs about how we should go about sorting out various claims and hypothesis. I believe extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I believe the scientific method and critical thinking are better than sacred texts and dogmas enunciated by religious authorities, when dealing with extraordinary claims (like aliens, bigfoot, demons, angels, God, Elvis-is-still-alive, etc).
i don't think this is the right sub-forum though.
Precisely. I'm an atheist, but I move to close this thread--there is already an existing atheism and agnosticism discussion somewhere else in iStorya.net
Atheism != science. You can be an atheist and believe in fairies, the Lochness Monster and Bigfoot. Here, have an infraction.
