James Yap's game is designed as a legit shooting guard and can not be utilised effectively at the 3 spot coz of the Purefoods team composition. Purefoods has limited players at the 2 spot. Kerby played small forward most of the time at the national team so he's comfortable at that spot. Same with Pingris, coz of his speed and mobility. And if both of them plays the 3 spot, Purefoods will be more dangerous compared to James Yap moving up to the 3 spot. He's much shorter than Kerby and Pingris.

Take a look at other teams small forwards :
Air 21 - Canaleta, Santos, Intal
Alaska - Dela Cruz, Hugnatan, Laure
    Ginebra - Hatfield, Salvacion
    Red Bull - Najorda, Alvarez
San Miguel - Seigle, Wilson, Tugade
    Sta. Lucia - Omolon, Williams
Talk n' Text - Washington, Pablo, Carey

I don't think James Yap can match other teams small forwards.

Alaska - Dela Cruz, Hugnatan, Laure
Hugnatan actually plays 4 and and only plays SF occasionally, but the Alaska system is different and allows each player to play multiple positions, Dela Cruz is a natural 2/3 player and I think James can match up well with him, Laure? he's just a role player and James can beat him off the dribble

    Ginebra - Hatfield, Salvacion
they bring Hatfield to play 4 too, and Salvacion and Yap are a very good match, they both play the same position, in fact Salvacion can even play 2

    [quote]Red Bull - Najorda, Alvarez
RB has a luxury of having many big men that they can develop their guys to play other than their uisual positions just like the Alaska system

San Miguel - Seigle, Wilson, Tugade
Tugade is natural 2/3, and should be no matchup problem for Yap so is Wilson who is actually more known as a role player and defensive player, guarding him should be no problem, getting your offense going is but he is slower than Yap, as for Seigle he is always a matchup nightmare, you put smaller guys on him he'll post them up, if bigger defenders hell beat them off the dribble

    Sta. Lucia - Omolon, Williams
Williams is utilised more as a PF and like seigle is a matchup nightmare becoz he can play multiple positions

Talk n' Text - Washington, Pablo, Carey
these guys play 4 too and like your suggestion, they can be moved as well to 3 and even Macmac Cardona and Renren Ritualo plays 3 for them at times

I don't think James Yap can match other teams small forwards.
if PF needs to play small, he can play 3 if not they can always take note of your suggestion

Every team can either play big or small depending on situations and coaches' team plays. You can even put a team without true centers or pointguards. But it's more logical to put Kerby, Pingris, Yee or Salvador to the 3 spot than James Yap moving in to that 3 spot.

James Yap can move up to the three spot, that's how versatile the PBA is. Purefoods has an overload of guards. Aside from James Yap, they've got Roger Yap, Peter June Simon and lately Chico Lanete and could either land in Brandon Cablay or retain Noy Castillo.

James Yap is a versatile player and can also play the 3, but he's more comfortable and very effective playing the 2 spot. macro_shot is right, Yap should play most of his minutes at the 2 spot coz that is what purefoods team needs. Let Raymundo, Pingris or Yee play take the small forward positions if that is what purefoods need.

I opine otherwise, Yee, Kerby and Jondan does not have the quick lateral movements to play naturally at 3 and if they did play 3 they will make their team slower, the current Purefoods lineup logically tells you that the guys you mentioned are recruited to play the frontcourt more because they are not necessarily a big team

taym pa..murag OT na ta ani nga thread dah, himo lang ta lain thread for Purefoods pud

Teams and players right now are getting bigger every year and it is a sense of obligation especially for the players to play multiple positions to remain and be competitive in the league. One upstanding factor in basketball is the height, the taller the player or team the more potent they are. Everybody can't deny that.
A very good example is Alvin Patrimonio, yes you guessed it right, the cornerstone and face of the Purefoods PBA franchise. He's probably the best power forward Philippine basketball ever had. But during the last 3 years of his career he changed his playing position from #4 spot to the #3 spot even if he was still very effective at that #4 spot. Why? bcoz of how the PBA league and its players have evolved. That is what Kerby Raymundo and other 6'6" players are trying to do and what teams are also trying to emphasize. I've never heard of a guard moving to the forward spot ever since coz it's a disadvantage, but I've seen a lot of forwards moving to guard positions coz height advantage is a must in basketball. That's why it's more sensible for Kerby to take the #3 spot than James Yap.
