This whole article is a fallacious and sentimental article written by a lawyer in mass media, and not an educator. Let me attempt to debunk the opinion stated per paragraph.
1st Paragraph: The change is a product of decades of research and study about the issue of improving our educational system. The paragraph is clearly full of similes and metaphors that solely aims to entice the readers. Nothing more, nothing less.
2nd Paragraph: As a lawyer and a mass media personnel, he fails to understand that his field itself is a product of theories. Theory is the basis of practice and application. Depending on the level of significance, this does not affect the fact that what we know today is a product of centuries of recording information through the human senses. Clearly, the paragraph generalizes all DepEd personnel that supported the law as having graduated their doctorates abroad. Change is sought incrementally. God created the world in 6 days and in the 7th He rested. People always complain of the absence of change in our country. People would ask, "Why is this possible in other countries? Why not here?" Here comes change and yet people still are unable to assimilate that change. Make a change they say...now they've been slandered as elitists living in towers. These people are not getting anything out of this. Come 2016 and there will be massive changes as well.
3rd Paragraph: DepEd never denied those problems. They've been there since as long as we could remember. The important thing is, they've done and are still doing something about it.
4th Paragraph: The problems of multi-level learning is a problem and I've experienced it as well as a public school student. But there are teachers. There are jobs. The root problems are the lack of qualified teachers and bureaucracy from local officials in-charge of releasing funds. There is still corruption in our system. There is still corruption in our local colleges, universities, and HEIs. Regardless, the immediate need of the K-12 curriculum is still too important to disregard.
5th Paragraph: Again, the government is not making a decision based on good intentions only. It is a product of decades of research. Research includes immersion and site study. You can't possibly expect a national government project to be passed without the rigorous scrutiny of multiple specialists from various factions.
6th Paragraph: One of the aims of the program is to enable the child to take the fastest route to earning money. As previously mentioned by other posts, the K-12 renders the tertiary education optional. The K-12 education gives the students and parents an option to go the TECH-VOC route. Do you know one of the major causes of the decline in education? Lack of competent teachers. Do you know one of the major causes why we lack competent teachers? The cream of the crop are taking up programs to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, nursers, etc. Do you know why this is the case? Filipino mentality. Given the TESDA option and it will lessen the expense. Another point is geography. Most rural students will take their tertiary education in cities. Compute the cost of living and travelling expenses. Naturally, living at home and having a school close to home is still cheaper. On that note, as students would opt for college, the units earned from Senior High will be credited as the K-12 is a tri-departmental move. The training in Senior High will also enable the students to have a first hand experience into the route they want to choose. There are a lot of professionals that are unhappy with their jobs, and there are a lot of articles to support this statement. Yes you could work in another job that's not related to the degree you earned. But studies show that the competence and satisfaction is in question. Personally you may claim it works for you. But you are not the center of the universe. What applies to you may not apply to the majority.
7th Paragraph: The state of hysterical parents against K-12 is a product of misinformation. The problem with us Filipinos, is we act before we understand. We conform to what is publicly lauded by the majority and fail to understand which is for the best. This is to the extent that we make poverty an excuse. "Give us subsidized housing because we are illegal settlers." Yet they sell their houses to earn money and go back to the squatter areas. True story. Before writing the article, the writer should have tried immersing himself with the practices of the common people as well. The last sentence is indeed a fact.
8th Paragraph: There are programs that aim to feed our public school children in the morning. NGOs such as Ramon Aboitiz Foundation and Jollibee Foundation among others are funding these programs. But yes, parents should have a conscience to raise and rear the number of children commensurate to their income.
9th Paragraph: The truth is never simple.
Mass Media gabasa lang ang baba sukad pa sa una. Usahay pataka lang ug yawit just to have their tampo sa balita.
Now thanks to you... I think it is a good idea to have a "Debunked" newspaper available for the printed media reader...![]()
Point proven sir @emberjim. There will always be two sides to the story. Commotion and doubt arise from uncertainty. I admire the vigilance of those against the K-12. That should never stop. Let's continue to criticize our government to help it reach its full potential, and eradicate corruption.
I've also read your post far back from this thread about the concept of Senior High and Tech-Voc, for which I forgot to credit you.
All-in-all, anti or pro, we have the same aim. The progress of our country.
I don't really have full familiarity of K-12 and how it actually work but I believe I somehow understand the essence of it and its vision. I am not an educator and almost a quitter back in my college days because of financial difficulties and I know there are lot of people out there who has the same problem going to college to secure their future. So K-12 could be the solution or will be the solution for that particular problem.
True sir @NudgeDELTA, we all have the same aim to progress our country. To do that, we have to look forward rather than pulling backwards.. Problem is, administration and opposition is like playing tug of war to get a credit, while their supporters anti-and pro is doing thug war. That makes us like an intertwined rope, the same rope that tied us and make it impossible for us to go forward to progress.
