While the Pope has Faith in Christ, the 2 inches of bullet-proof glass serves the Catholic church 2 major purpose:

1: save money, instead of spending for yet another papal funeral and conclave
2: protect the man himself from vicious attacks and carry on with his obligations to serve the faithful.

Bullet-proof glass is used for PRACTICALITY above anything else. It's a bright idea indeed.
