According to Ambeth Ocampo, the reason why the Americans favored Rizal over Bonifacio is because they do not want the Filipinos, like Boni, to make another bloody revolution against them.

true, works of Rizal awaken Filipinos but it was not the reason why we have our freedom. (freedom? really? do we have that now?

)
Rizal is Bonifacio's idol. When Boni was still a teenager, he already idolized Rizal. One accounted incident was when Rizal and the rest of the staff of La Liga Filipina, if I'm not mistaken with the name of the circulation, was having a meeting here in the Philippines, Boni was so eager to see his idol Rizal. It was Rizal's novels that imbued the revolutionary passion of Boni.
That is why when Rizal declined joining the revolution, Boni got angry. Because of this incident, Boni used Rizal's image and hang it in all of KKK's camps (pareho bitaw anang kay Pres. PNoy i-sab-it ang picture sa likod sa mga opisina sa politiko?) as if to show that Rizal has something to do with the Revolution which the Spaniards believed. The katipuneros also used Rizal's name as a sort of password. In fact, Rizal was sentenced to die not only because of his works, but mainly because he was the "brain of the revolution."
Rizal actually did more than just wrote his novels, directly or indirectly.
OTOH, one thing, among the many, that separates Rizal from the rest of the candidates of being our National Hero is his dream of having the Filipino identity. He was the first "Filipino," before we were called "Filipinos", to insist that we have our own identity. We are not merely indios or slaves of the Spaniards. We are Filipinos.

mao ra na. hehe
Rizal died because he chose to. He was in Singapore at that time when he was already tagged by the Spaniards as the brain of the revolution (they say it's Mabini but that is just a title in our elementary history books). He knows better than anyone else that when he returns to the Philippines, he will be executed. His family and friends do not want him to return home because they are afraid of the consequences. However, Rizal said that what does all his novel's mean if even the writer has no courage of facing the Spaniards. So he returned to the country to continue with his own way of revolution. I believe, that is why we have the quote "The Filipino is worth dying for."
It is not right to say that Rizal did not support the revolution. He was against it at that time Dr. Pio tried to convinced him because we do not have the arms and force to defeat the Spaniards. He said many will just die in vain. True enough, many really died and in the end, we were just sold to the Americans. Unsa man tawon laban sa "itak" against sa pusil. Mao rana ang point ni Rizal.
