‘Game Of Thrones’ Scribe Bryan Cogman Takes On ‘Magic The Gathering’ For Fox


It was inevitable that the writers and directors of HBO’s staggeringly good Game Of Thrones would begin taking over the fantasy realm in features. 20th Century Fox has set Bryan Cogman, a producer, story editor and writer on the HBO drama, to script a potential franchise movie out of the fantasy card game Magic The Gathering. It will be produced by Hasbro and Fox-based producer Simon Kinberg.




Fox acquired the rights last January on Magic The Gathering, a game that was hatched in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. It became a raging geek success and hatched a collectible-trading-card-game movement. There are creatures, wizards and magic spells and players use all of them to defeat each other. Hasbro bought the company in 1999. When they have time, the GOT guys are getting more and more feature jobs; Alan Taylor directed Thor 2 and is now helming the first in the Terminator trilogy.

President of Hasbro Studios Stephen Davis, CEO Brian Goldner and Wizards of the Coast CEO Greg Leeds will serve as executive producers. Aditya Sood and Josh Feldman executives at Kinberg's Genre Films will also executive produce.

According to THR, Fox has set writer/producer Simon Kinberg to produce the film adaptation, with the intention of putting together the first chapter in a new big-budget franchise “on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.”

I feel like an utter nerd for being hyped over this and I feel lonely in my hypeness. I wonder if there are other former mtg players in this forum?


As a big fan of fantasy epics, I can say that this proj definitely has potential to make it big. Biased pd ko kay player ko sauna, but imo, an MTG adaptation is a lot more feasible and palatable compared to saaaaay... a kingkiller chronicle movie, or a gentleman bastard, black company, first law, WoT, riftwar, malazan.. I could go on and on... and I think this not because the MTG multiverse is superior story wise - most books I've read were written better than the MTG books and had better story - but because some of the stories in the multiverse would translate well on the big screen. Kinda like star wars, the books are just mehh but the movies were very good to great. In any case, the movie(s) can't be worse than the hobbit.
