MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Chito Salud believes Manny Pacquiao will fit in perfectly in the professional league as he embodies the ideals that the PBA strives to stand for.


On Monday, it was announced that Pacquiao will be the head coach of Team KIA, one of the three new teams set to make their PBA debuts next season.

"Many concerns and issues have been expressed over the last few weeks about the possibility of Manny joining the PBA as a player and/or coach," Salud acknowledged. "Today, they announced that he’ll be the head coach."

"I must say that those concerns were expressed out of genuine concern and sincere sentiments, for Manny's better interests," he added. "But my take away from all of this is that it’s a perfect fit."

Salud said Pacquiao, the first boxer to win world titles in eight different weight divisions, "stands for what the league strives to stand for today."

"That is, the highest degree of sportsmanship, the highest degree of excellence, anchored on the principle that fan and public interest is always paramount," he explained.

Salud acknowledged that Pacquiao will, of course, bring a certain "wow factor" into the PBA.

"But I want to emphasize that Manny is the embodiment of what the PBA is striving to stand for, and what is that – the highest degree of excellence and sportsmanship," he added.

That said, Salud does expect the PBA to gain more fans especially with Pacquiao now serving as a head coach of one of their expansion teams.

"Yes, of course," Salud answered when asked if he expects more fans to flock to the PBA. "Boxing and basketball fans alike." -
