    correct me if im wrong...

in chemistry water generally specified as hard susbtance (hard water)

if u boil the water, minerals will be lost, i guess thats what they called soft water...

try to examine the kettle in ur kitchen... u can see a white color covering the surface of the kettle -- its the calcium and other minerals that was deposited when u heat a water.

paging any chemical engineers out there pls help me explain... hehehe

Hard water is water that contains Calcium & Magnesium Carbonates. Typically its like the water we have in our taps (in Cebu) and water we draw from our deep wells because Cebu island is a lime bed.

TO convert hard water to soft water there are a few things that can be done:

    1) boiling it precipitates some of the 'hardness'. Thats why you have those white deposits (called scales) on your kettles.
    2) Using a process called water softening using ion exchange resins (an engineering process). This is what industries are doing.
    3) Using reverse osmosis technology (like the water stations where we buy our 5 gal purified water)
    4) by distillation - technically not only softens but also purifies the water (like reverse osmosis)

    Hope this helps.
