Nag issue2x naman gani si Obama ug "warning" kung magpa dayon pa si Putin. So NATO is bound to intervene gyud ani. The west will look like an idiot to the world if it does nothing, and it can send a message to other countries (i.e. China) that they can just take whatever they perceive to be theirs. China can just take the Spratlys or Panatag based on that.

I think they also sent the same message during the syrian crisis and got nothing out of it. The problem is Putin isn't going to back down again this time. I don't know why they want to risk another gamble when the world economy is still reeling from the 2008 financial crisis.

Also, there have been former members of israeli militia leading the pro-EU protests. So it is quite obvious all of this wasn't instigated internally.

Sa laktod nga pagka storya, ang hinatag gani, gihatag na gud na, wala nay bawiay. And if the majority of the people in Crimea are Russian speakers and feel more loyalty towards Russia, aw mo bakwit sila padung Russia. If they don't like it, they can leave. But the land itself, Crimea, belongs to the Ukraine and should stay in Ukrainian hands.

Russia keeps saying they only want to protect their "interests" in Crimea but there are plenty of options other than military aggression.. Nidako man gud ang ulo aning Putin (figuratively) coz he's done the same thing before in Georgia.. He got all sorts of warnings & threats from the US but that's all it was coz 6 years later, Russian troops are still in there.. Plus nadayon pa jud ang Sochi Winter Olympics despite all of the international law he said to have broken..

which is strange because Svoboda, a Ukrainian political group that is in the leading front of Euromaidan, is known for their anti-antisemitism. I guess some things have to be put aside for a common enemy.

@æRLO --- didn't Putin "steal" Robert Kraft's Super Bowl ring? mentally unstable jud ning tawhana. He takes what he wants even if it's not his for the taking.
I think it has to do with the Crimea and Ukraine's general proximity to the Black Sea and the west with regards to Russia.

Putin is never to be underestimated, it's not that he's unstable, but he is gifted with the knack for intrigue. He has a good poker face. Anyway, whether justified or not because of ethnic Russians in Crimea--Putin needs to be checked. It should also be noted that though the majority in Crimea support the Russian presence there, the minorities in the region, especially the Tatars have pledged to fight if Russia decides to take actions to annex the region--BTW, there is not an overwhelming majority of Crimeans who align with Russians, it's like 58%, then the rest are made up of people who call themselves ethnically Ukrainians and Tatars or something, but it can almost be described as marginal.

I'm afraid Obama will have no choice but to up the ante, and be more forceful than America's play on Syria and Georgia. I never liked the Reagan foreign policy, but Obama has to adopt a fairly similar stance with Russia this time around (minus the Iran-Contra, and operation cyclone/Reagan Doctrine BS). And again, U.N. is looking like a useless entity.

Mao na ni run, gisapot si Putin because his beloved Russian national hockey team didn't even get to play for a medal game in Sochi. He's one cranky guy right about now. The sleeping bear awakes.

Yes. Specifically includes some neo-nazis. I don't know what's going to happen to the west and north of ukraine once the ultra-nationalists get their way. It seems that it may get much more complex than letting EU and pro-western businesses get a foot hold in the region. But either way, those groups in the north and west really hate the russians.

The ex-KGB putin knows his game all too well. Obama is definitely going to have a hard time on this one. Much more difficult compared to syria and georgia. For the meantime, let's wait until the detour for Russian natural gas is completed since there isn't any viable replacement yet for russian natural gas for some EU states, especially germany.
