The crimea was a gift from Russia to the Ukraine. In this case majority of the inhabitants in the crimea are of russian descent. Even if the russians may have sent some armed troops in unmarked vehicles so as not to provoke a sign of military invasion, which the pro-EU dissidents may have accussed Russia of doing, they still won't be able to do anything since the crimeans have a greater bias towards towards Russia.

There is more ethnic similarity with the east ukrainians with that of the russians, should ukraine be balkanized the east(which may include crimea) may join Russia. The problem with the west and the rest of ukraine is that once this happens they may not be able to get natural gas from russia for heating as well as aid of the remaining $15B part of which $3B has already been given out while the rest has been withheld because of the situation.

Also, Russia is hedging her natural gas bet by putting a pipeline that may pass under the black sea and may pass through bulgaria and finally into the EU. So whatever happens, it is the west ukraine that will be at a losing end.

The problems in the Ukraine started around November last year. So it's quite obvious they are constrained by time.

Crimeans may actually have a better future with Russia compared to the EU. Haha nobody said they would take it back. But choosing between the EU and Russia, crimeans would prefer russia. Besides, there are more ethnic russians in the crimea.

Crimea’s parliament calls for referendum on region’s future - FT.com

The transfer merited only a paragraph in Pravda, the official Soviet newspaper, on Feb. 27, 1954. The story was one long sentence and dense with detail. Here's what it said:

"Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet transferring Crimea Province from the Russian Republic to the Ukraine Republic, taking into account the integral character of the economy, the territorial proximity and the close economic ties between Crimea Province and the Ukraine Republic, and approving the joint presentation of the Presidium of the Russian Republic Supreme Soviet and the Presidium of the Ukraine Republic Supreme Soviet on the transfer of Crimea Province from the Russian Republic to the Ukraine Republic."

"Gifted" because Khrushchev's transfer was ostensibly to mark the 300th anniversary of Ukraine's merger with the Russian empire. And he probably didn't think the Soviet Union would be gone less than 40 years later.
How the case of why Crimea was given to Ukraine is actually a complex decision. Times change, borders change, even the people residing in a state change. Crimea probably had more ethnic Ukrainians before they were booted and replaced with russians.

^I doubt if Ukraine would give up Crimea that easily, if indeed Russia decides to "seize" it. I just worry that if Putin gets what he wants, this will embolden China to go after what it wants too. And what does that mean for us?

Actually it's the people living in the crimea who gets to decide what to do with their future. Apparently Ukraine since independence has been plagued by corruption, etc. If they want stability then they would rather secede and join Russia or become autonomous and be recognized by Russia.

"We have not asked NATO to send troops. This land belongs to the Russian world. We would like everyone to remember that. It's a millennium-old history. The people of Russia and Ukraine belong to the Russian world," Konstantinov said.
