Remember how we Filipinos hated it when Claire Danes called Manila "a ghastly and weird city" and "just f--king smelled of cockroaches. There's no sewage system in Manila, and people have nothing there. People with, like, no arms, no legs, no eyes, no teeth.... Rats were everywhere." The city council of Manila was so offended by this statement that they declared the actress persona non grata.

I get it how we hate people criticizing us and generalizing us. I just find it hypocritical that we can't see ourselves doing the same things to people of other countries/cultures. We like to generalize about Indians being filthy and smelly, the Chinese being greedy and immoral, and Europeans being morally bankrupt...and then we raise hell whenever some netizen from another country make the same negative remarks about our country. We like to say that Europeans are immoral for not criminalizing incest or that the Chinese are inbred people or that the Koreans have no manners, when fact of the matter is you only need to turn the pages of our local papers to see how frequent the news is about some father raping their own daughter, homes lost from raging fires due to gross negligence, stabbing incidents over trifle problems like staring or fighting over the Karaoke microphone, and so on.

I find India pretty ghastly, but I knew most of this stuff anyway. Anyhow, I agree with Bears Grill's comment and just want to add that Asia really is one of the most racist places. Every nation in this region considers itself superior to some other nation and derogatory comments are often made in public forums with little or no attempt at diplomacy or understanding.
