We can't blame him if he has likely killed several people during his hiding, he was still under the impression that the war was still going on. Wala man gud siyay access sa internet or have a smartphone like most of the people now, even if he had, I don't think he'll be updating his fb account several times an hour or tweeting like crazy, taking pictures of what he was drinking or eating, or taking hundreds of selfies.

I learned about this Jap soldier's remarkable story when I was on a trip to Corregidor Island.
The tourist guide recounted what happened when we passed by one of the island's jungle.

I was awed by Mr. Onoda's loyalty to his superiors, truly a man with a word of honor

I heard about this jap soldier a long time ago,
a very renowned Philippine japanese struggler of the post world war 2 era.
Some of my folks said that this guy ate what monkeys consumed a clever way to survive in a jungle
where a lot of poisonous plants are present.

Onoda embodies the Japanese spirit. That's why it's no wonder Japan has become what it is, despite it's very limited resources.

May his soul rest in peace.
He was indeed a very dedicated & patriotric person.

IIRC in a book i've read years ago, his commanding officer was actually not Maj. Yoshimi Taniguchi.
On his surrender a photo was published in our local paper but his real commanding officer was not identified correctly, or so it seems. And nobody dared to correctly identify him.
His commanding officer was Prince Takeda, a cousin of Emperor Hirohito. He goes by a different name in the military as a Major.

He was the reason why Onada-san dared to come out in the open. Only if his CO will fetch him personally in the Lubang forest.
