SkullGirls
I had been hearing about Skullgirls regularly for what feels like over a year now. It gained a lot of hype before the holidays and then seemed to get brushed under the rug during the “Hollywood” hit season of games out last fall. It hit Xbox Live and the PSN on April 10th and has been stirring up a storm on the fighting game scene.
This fighting game is quirky, different and has a unique feel and charm to it that many games do not – especially fighting games. Skullgirls is inspired by Guilty Gear and Blazblue more than other fighters like Street Fighter, Marvel Versus Capcom, Dead or Alive, or Tekken and the feel of the game mimics Guilty Gear/BlazBlue in both gameplay and presentation.
The all-female cast is made up of eight characters, each with very distinct styles and moves. The player can pick a team between 1 and 3 characters allowing their strengths to adjust accordingly (ex: a team of 1 is not going to get sweeped by a team of 3). The user also gets to pick what each character’s finishing/super move is out of a large moveset available. This allows for some heavy customization to your team even if there is a lack of characters to pick from.
So far Skullgirls has been receiving pretty good ratings from across the board, with an average of 79/100 on Metacritic; including an 85 from IGN, an 83 from Gametrailers, and typically mostly 80′s from other game sties. Gamers are raving about the gameplay, the snarky characters, the fancy animation, and the unique styles.
