No, being a nice guy is strategically ineffective. If you're lucky enough for this strategy to have worked on your case, it probably took a couple of months/years for her to say "yes". Just be assertive without being an assh*le. You are only justified on being an assh*le if the situation demands it. =)
Human behavior is, fortunately, very predictable. Just observe and create your own strategy on getting the girl of your dreams. =)
[ simon.cpu ] <-- still doesn't know how to keep the girl of his dreams, however. I still believe that girls who say "yes" to nice guys are girls that are capable of having a long-term relationship. =)

thats why i quit being a nice guy long ago... im not abusive or anything... ever since i havent really have problems with the gurls...
but once in a while theres someone who'll messes you up even though how much u know the game... "you cant win all" is what i say all the time...
