    I think it should work. Wala pay information regarding 7850 + R9 270x crossfire. (Ganahan pud ko makahibaw since i have a 7850 as well. hehe).

    7970 crossfire with a R9-280X has been Confirmed working.

    270x is rebranded pitcairn on steroids, you can pair it on any pitcairn based HD7xxx series. Same with the 280x and HD7970/HD7950. As for the speed, it will downclock to the lowest clock speed. And pairing an HD7850 and HD7870 would only be logical if you bought an HD7850 now and a year later the HD7870 price went down the HD7850 level.

    Will the shader cores also double in crossfire?

    yes shader cores is 1+1=2
