Default US, UK send warships to help in typhoon-hit areas

THE Pentagon has ordered the deployment of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington and several other United States (US) Navy ships to the country to assist the victims of Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in the Eastern Visayas.

In a statement released by the United States Embassy in Manila, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel directed the vessels "to make best speed" to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster support.

USS George Washington, which carries 5,000 sailors and more than 80 aircraft, is currently in Hong Kong for a port call and has been recalled early from shore leave and expected to arrive within the next 48 to 72 hours.

Also, supply ship USNS Charles Drew already is underway and will rendezvous with the group en route to the archipelago as well as USS Lassen.

"These ships and aircraft will be able to provide humanitarian assistance, supplies and medical care, as needed, to support ongoing efforts led by the Philippines' government and military," the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the British government has also sent a warship and military transport vehicle to assist in the ongoing humanitarian efforts in Leyte and Samar.

In a statement posted by the United Kingdom's (UK) Ministry of Defense on its website, Prime Minister David Cameron has sent HMS Daring of the Royal Navy to provide humanitarian assistance, helicopter lift from one on-board Lynx and engineering and first-aid expertise.

HMS Daring already headed to the Philippines from Singapore. It also carried equipment to make drinking water from seawater.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) meanwhile will send at least one Boeing C-10 aircraft to airlift the much needed relief items to affected residents in Eastern Visayas.

UK has allotted a total of £10 million worth of humanitarian aid for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. (Sunnex)

US Companies, banks and the NBA are on a growing list of private-sector donors who have pledged millions of dollars to support relief efforts in the Philippines.

Global banking group HSBC (HBC) and telecom giant Samsung have each offered $1 million in immediate assistance for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which ripped through the country Friday.

Thousands have died and some 660,000 have been forced from their homes. More than 2 million people, including 300,000 pregnant woman or new mothers, need food aid, according to the Philippine government.

HSBC said it was encouraging staff to donate food, water and medicines, and was mobilizing volunteers in the country to pack goods for distribution via the Philippine Red Cross.

The NBA and the NBA players' union have given a total of $500,000, half to UNICEF and half to World Vision, which has been flying in thousands of blankets and tarpaulins to provide temporary shelter.

Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), which employs nearly 13,000 Filipinos, is matching donations from employees in an effort it said would raise $1 million. Cash donations have also come from the IKEA Foundation ($2.6 million), Toyota (TM) ($230,000), Sony (SNE) ($150,000) and Nikon (NINOY) ($100,000).

Other companies are offering their services or technology for free.

FedEx (FDX, Fortune 500) said it was working with a number of disaster relief organizations to help transport equipment and relief supplies to the worst affected areas.

Air Asia and Zest Hotels are offering free flights and accommodation to aid workers.

Vodafone (VOD) has sent a team of technicians to the Philippines to help install two portable mobile phone networks to provide emergency telecommunications, enabling relief organizations to respond faster.

The company deployed a network to the Philippines during a typhoon last December. Almost 300,000 calls were made across the network in 17 days.

Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) has set up a web page with a search function for missing persons, as well as links to official government information on the disaster and the relief effort. Those interested in donating can make contributions to the American Red Cross through Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) iTunes, or can go directly to the websites of the Philippine Red Cross, the World Food Program, UNICEF and CARE.
