only a foot drop, that's not so bad.
if you have a desktop you can try hooking it up and retrieve the files from there.
to be sure you're not wasting time and money having the usb port repaired, ask him/her to
access the drive first and make sure nothing's wrong with it.
if the repair is not cost effective, you can just buy a new hdd enclosure,
or get one of these...
