    Default Future billiards king’

CEBUANO cue slinger Anthony Raga has what it takes to become a world champion and that’s an observation coming from someone who came close to becoming one himself.

Roberto “Superman” Gomez, who was the 2007 World 9-Ball championships runner-up, said Raga will go far in pool.

“He is really good. He beat Ronnie Alcano three times, he also beat me three times and Johann Chua. He’s got great shot-making skills and he’s got the skills and talent to become a world champion,” Gomez said in Tagalog in an interview with reporters at the Jancor Billiard Hall last Thursday.

However, Gomez found some flaws in Raga’s game that could be corrected should he decide to join international competitions.

“Medyo gigil lang, he wants to finish the game immediately. And sometimes, he doesn’t think his shots through. But those could be easily corrected, all he has to do is join high level competitions. I told him not to hurry his shots but his shot-making skills are really good,” said Gomez.

Gomez is helping Raga get international experience and has invited the 16-year-old Tabunok-Talisay City native to join him in a tournament in Indonesia.

    Elementary king

Raaga admitted that he has some flaws in his game.

“Usahay pod bitaw careless ko sa akong duwa. Pero makabawi ra man pod ko. Focus lang gyud ko aning billiard kay wa man ko naka eskuyla mao maninguha ko nga maka duwa ko og dagko nga tournament sa gawas,” said Raga, who won the Sun.Star Superbalita elementary division in 2007 as a 10-year-old.

Six years later, he would beat Angelo Arriola in the Class A finals of the same tournament, earning a cool P100,000.

His first step to becoming one of the country’s best billiard players is to join Gomez in Indonesia next month.

“I am preparing my papers so I can go with Gomez to Indonesia. I hope to play well there so I can continue improving,” said Raga.

After Indonesia, Raga plans to go to Manila and hone his billiard skills against the country’s biggest and brightest cue masters.
