Donaire, foe set to seal deal
All's well that ends well.
Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux, main protagonists in Bob Arum's April 13 card at the Radio City Music Hall, will be on hand Thursday (Friday in Manila) in New York.
The Donaire-Rigondeaux duel will be for the unified world super-bantamweight championship and their matchup has left fight fans drooling with excitement.
Donaire, parading a 30-1 record with 20 knockouts, is regarded as one of the top three fighters in the world regardless of weight and he solidified his stature as an elite puncher last year with four sensational wins.
Rigondeaux, who won gold medals in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and captured three world amateur titles, has only fought 11 times as a professional, including eight knockouts but has a wealth of amateur experience.
This will be the second time Donaire will be strutting his stuff in New York and the Filipino-American fighter has vowed to put on a show of force.
When he faced Argentine Omar Narvaez in Oct. 2011, Donaire had to settle for a lopsided points win as the South American fought to survive.
This time, Donaire has promised to do much better than the last time.
Late Tuesday night, Arum could finally heave a sigh of relief after being assured that Rigondeaux will agree to random drug testing, a provision that the 30-year-old Donaire put in the contract.
Donaire Jr. may be up vs. familiar enemy
NONITO Donaire Jr.’s comeback fight may be against a familiar face.
According to a report by Ronnie Nathanielz at Philboxing.com, Donaire Jr. will most likely be facing Vic Darchinyan in a rematch in November.
Donaire Jr. and Darchinyan fought in 2006. Donaire Jr. still was an up-and-comer, while Darchinyan was an established name in the flyweight ranks.
Donaire Jr. shocked the world after handing Darchinyan his first career loss, a fifth-round technical knockout.
Darchinyan, now 37 years old, has been itching for a rematch against Donaire Jr. for years. However, both boxers never crossed paths again.
The 30-year-old Donaire Jr. is currently recuperating from a shoulder surgery and is also awaiting the arrival of his first son with wife Rachel Donaire.
Donaire Jr., 31-2 with 20 knockouts, was off the best year of his career winning two world titles and unanimous “Fighter of the Year” honors after beating Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Jeffrey Mathebula, Jorge Arce and Toshiaki Nishioka.
But last April, Donaire Jr. surprisingly lost to Guillermo Rigondeaux by unanimous decision.
After back-to-back failed bids at world championships, Darchinyan, 39-5-1 with 28 knockouts, rose back up the ranks with two straight wins against erstwhile unbeaten Luis del Valle and Javier Gallo.
