A gay man can be effeminate, butch or otherwise. as for your classmate, It could be a case of "conformity" to society's expectations on how a "man" should act and behave which in my opinion is just ridiculous. there is nothing wrong with being effeminate the same way there is nothing wrong with being a "masculine" guy.

These stereotypes and labeling are obsolete and outdated in this day and age where people are becoming more sexually fluid without feeling the need to identify as gay, straight bisexual or whatnot.

And I think it is a misconception that just because someone has a girlfriend they are not gay. There are a lot of married men or men with girlfriends who happen to have homosexual inclinations
