People who have not been to such or similar situation may react differently. Conflict at sea is never easy. Many may take side with the fishing vessel thinking that they are civilians'. Be it Taiwanese or local, never be lenient in handling an aggressor at sea. Either you kill or you get killed. And the good thing about it is that, the perpetrator can get away easily from the violations and even crime. No evidence. No crime scene. Sometimes, these foreign fishing vessels just don't violate territorial waters, they at times even do small time piracy or extortion.

When they come across small boats and vessels, the latter are threatened of being shot or rammed and forced to be boarded. Extortion follows. But, when they encounter the coast guards, bantay dagat or vessels they can't overpower, they just speed off or dump their weapons over board when caught.

This isn't the first time that some Taiwanese, and other nationalities, have tried fishing in our waters... Many have been caught but are they punished? Where are they right now? We just had issues with Chinese who destroyed 500 year old corals Tubbataha and I don't know what happened or what punishments they have to those Chinese.

The latest incident is just a reminder that Philippines is not a public fishing ground!

Now that Taiwan is coming back(with a big stick of course) to the area which to them is disputed, so what now?

Taiwan’s naval forces are more than a match for the Philippine Navy, Yang said, amid a dispute over the killing of a Taiwanese fisherman by personnel aboard a Philippine Coast Guard vessel on Thursday last week.

“We without a doubt have adequate forces [against the Philippines],” he said.
Lawmakers threw their support behind the planned exercise as they adopted a resolution demanding that the drill utilize the coast guard’s 2,000-tonne Hsinbei vessel, the first CGA patrol boat equipped with a 40mm anti-aircraft cannon, as well as navy destroyers and frigates.
The combined exercise would be held in waters about 164 nautical miles (304km) southeast of the southernmost tip of Taiwan, where the 15-tonne Taiwanese fishing boat Kuang Ta Hsing No. 28 was attacked by a Philippine Coast Guard vessel, leading to the death of Taiwanese fisherman Hung Shih-cheng (洪石成).
Cheng said the CGA is also considering installing more 40mm cannons on coast guard vessels.

According to the CGA, the Kuang Ta Hsing No. 28 was operating 1.8 nautical miles (3.3km) beyond the temporary law enforcement line when it was confronted by the Philippine Coast Guard and left disabled within the enforcement line.

At a meeting of the legislature’s Internal Administration Committee, CGA Minister Wang Jinn-wang (王進旺) and Council of Agriculture Deputy Minister Hu Sing-hwa (胡興華) both agreed to consider expanding the line further southward.

Asa ra man na sila kung ma-modernize na pud ta,
gara kaayo ning mga singkit da, abi kay sakto mas armas.

okay rana sir, we have the upper hand. By international law, we are right. sending their navy in disputed seas? not so bright. even PRC is not sending their navy in contested waters in West Philippine Sea.

modern filipinos are like Dr. Jose Rizal. We do not fight by arms but by pen. Even Filipino hackers are doing its job, article writers and so on...

besides, we are not in the business of war... we are in the business of what is ours. And apparently Taiwan using their navy in the frontline right now vs. our coast guard? hmmmm doesn't really sound right in the international community.

what's more? their economic backbone are run by the pinoys themselves, surely they will hurt inside too if they hit us.
