GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines -- The camp of congressional candidate Manny Pacquiao denounced text messages that have swamped mobile phone users since Saturday claiming the boxing superstar was killed in an ambush.
Franklin Gacal Jr., legal counsel and campaign manager of Pacquiao, accused reelectionist Representative Darlene Custodio's political strategists of being behind what he called black propaganda to mislead the voters.
This reporter and various radio stations here were hounded by text messages from the public asking if the report of Pacquiao’s death was true.
"Manny Pacquiao is very much alive and is very busy campaigning for his candidacy. There's no truth to such report. It was meant to mislead the voters and there's no doubt this is the handiwork of the opposite camp," Gacal told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net.
Gacal claimed the text messages were a desperate move, allegedly by Custodio's camp, to project that she is the only candidate for Congress in the district and sway people into voting for her.
The Inquirer tried but failed to get the reaction of Custodio.
This reporter asked for the mobile phone number of Custodio from a member of her media bureau. However, the number given was that of Custodio's secretary, who claimed the opposition solon did not carry a cellular phone.
Pacquiao is challenging Custodio, now seeking a third and last term, for the congressional seat of the South Cotabato's first district.
Gacal claimed the trend is in favor of Pacquiao based on the crowds that flock to their rallies.
"This is an indication that the people are already fed up with the Antoninos. They want change. They want a new leader who can bring more projects for the district," Gacal said.
Pacquiao promised to bring in more investments and projects to the district if he wins the May 14 elections.
The boxing champion said he would use his influence and popularity to convince investors to come here, as well as his closeness with President Arroyo to bring in more projects.
Pacquiao said the country has enough laws that only need implementation.
"Marami na tayong magagandang batas kaya lang hindi naipapatupad. Ang higit na kailangan ng tao ngayon ay mga proyektong makakatulong sa buhay nila at ang pagpapatupad nga mga kasalukuyang batas [We have many beautiful laws that are not implemented. The greater need of the people would be projects that could help their lives and the implementation of existing laws]," Pacquiao said at one of his campaign rallies.
Antonino's camp is criticizing Pacquiao for his lack of educational qualification for lawmaking.
Pacquiao said if he wins, he can hire lawyers and researchers to prepare and draft bills on his behalf.
He emphasized that a candidate's sincerity, commitment and dedication to serve are more important considerations.
He said he is unfazed by the death threat he claims to have received. He said politics is just like fighting in the boxing ring where he stakes his safety to bring honor to his country and fellow Filipinos.
