Another is unsay significance sa WD RED or GREEN? Dili ba diay generic ra ng mga models nila? or mao gyud na sila nga mga drives ang intended for servers? 5400 RPMs raman gihapon na sila?
Ans: WD Red and WD Green line of drives are almost the same... naa lang na puno na improvement and WD Red... jus to name one like, designed sya for a NAS application w/ the software and RAID configuration on SOHO. both of them can be use on a RAID configuration... but, ang Green line, not preferable if gamiton sa RAID controllerrs (HW RAID) kay taas ug idle/sleep time sya. i-tagak sya sa controller kay mag tuo ang controller na guba ang drive kay wala mo function dayon... but, there is a fix on this one man hinoon from WD. but for FreeNAS, dili ni siya makita na problema kay software RAID man ang implementation sa FreeNAS. WD Green drive is "ok" for FreeNAS on RAID configuration or any other software RAID implementation.

Bro, lain na ba sab ni nga issue sa WD Green drives pag-gamiton sa HW based NAS?...... kay naa ni silay issue nga itagak ang drive sa HW controller tungod sa TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery) issue, ginatagak sa HW RAID controller ang drive kay tungod sa taas nga error recovery time, nagtuo ang controller nga daot na imong drive kay dili na siya mo-response, pero in reality naga-basa siya... kina-usab-usab pa niya iyang position sa head para mabasa ang data. Some earlier version sa Green drives na discover nila nga ga-support diay ug TLER.. pwede nilang i-enable by using some programs.

^ the same issue ra na bro... mao na ang main reason sa Green drives maong i-kick-out sya sa controller... mo subra sa allowable time sa controller maon ma a-an na guba. pero, sa soft RAID, dili ra in ani. wala man ang (kick-out)2x sa mobo controller. but hinay lang gyud ang response sa Green drives gikan sa pag standby or sleep mode. naa man work around ani hinoon... i have a WD Elements external drive (1TB)... 100% sure ko na Green Caviar ang naa sa sulod ani niya. basta from standby/idle mode, inig read nako, taas ang time na mo response sya kay mo lihok pa ang head. maka kita pa ta'g moving icon na equivalent sa "sand clock"... then compare nko sa 2.5" na external drive diri, Hitachi 80 GB... PATA pa gyud ( mas older ni sa Elements. almost than 6 yrs na ni nko)... inig access nako, respond man dayon... walay "clock" na makita. response time nya kay mura lang sya'g internal drive... pasabot, wla mag sleep or nag park ang head nya then wala sya mag spin down pud... active sige...

WD Red have TLER enabled while WD Green don't have... mag sige'g park/dock and head nya... kaning sige'g in ani na activity, mo lessen ang life span sa mechanical HDD tungod sa wear & tear. even sa desktop HDDs na mag sige ta'g switched on & switched off... mo ubos ang "MTTBF"...

Raw Storage - 8 TB
Usable Storage - 3.6 TB

Dako ug masayang ang RAID-Z2 nga set-up, pero sa akoa... ok lang kay mga importante man nga mga personal file.. photos,videos, scanned documents (SSS, mga rehistro, contract, titulo)... tanan nga mga dokumento naa nay digital copy. Actually, naa sab koy duha ka separate back-up sa akong mga importanteng files, 2 x 2TB WD Essential.... Wala lay akong back-up sa mga movies (500+GB) dili ni importante para nako....

ah i see bro... i want to know the actual usable storage space sa 4x2TB. more than half ang gi usikan diay nya. kay 2 HDD for redundancy man ni dba? ning kick-in naman pud ning katol sa passion nato... hehehe... pero, mapugngan ra man hinoon. sa akoa na case, akoang important files kay wla ra maka abot ug 20GB... ang naka dako lang kay mga movies... pero, 600+GB pa man tanan including movies... "nice to have" lang gyud ang mag RAIDZ2... tambal sa "what if" pero, nag sunog ta ug hard earned money... paets... na duha na raba ning FreeNAS box nko diri... tsk tsk tsk

Mahal-mahal man ang 2TB diri, sayang mao ta na ako plano. Though still on the planning phase paman ko. Wala pa gani ko kabalo if unsaon gyud nako pagporma ug patagan if naa na unya ang mga HWs.

ah i see... a 1 TB will do ra gyud hinoon bisan dili ka mag RAID configuration. pag weekly back-up lang gyud sa mga "business" files that are stored on the file server...

for the free NAS OS, pwede ra pud Nas4Free... gamay ra ni sya system requirement compared sa FreeNAS 8 variants... Nas4Free is a continuation of the original FreeNAS 7... i'll DIY another olddy platform here for a NAS box... it would be a Celeron D 360 w/ 4GB DDR2 800 system ram... plano pa unsa ang HDD na gamiton pud nko ani nya...

Tried using nas4free a few days ago. Mas paspas kaysa freenas 8.3.1. Mas gamay pa jud ug ram requirements.
