We have all seen people flirting with each other and have probably also flirted ourselves without thinking about any real dire consequences.
But let’s talk about flirting from a Biblical perspective.
If we try and define what it means to flirt, we probably think of girls playing with their hair and fluttering their eyelashes! It is defined as “Playful behaviour intended to arouse sexual interest”; “A seductive woman/man who uses his/her *** appeal to exploit other women/men”
Reflect on your intentions and motives: From the above definitions, what is important is our INTENTIONS and MOTIVES. These definitions suggest intentions of causing sexual interest and exploiting people. I believe arousing sexual interest is the most common intention…and yes, many will say what’s the big deal?
Well one of the questions we need to ask ourselves is are we causing the other person to sin? One of the sins spoken about in the bible is lust. This is a sinful longing; the inward sin which leads to falling away from God (Easton’s dictionary). Jesus said: ‘But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.’ [Matthew 5:28]. This may not be the thought that comes to mind when flirting with someone BUT IF DOING THIS CAUSES the sin of lust, this could be the reason for a person to fall spiritually.
If we consider the story of Samson we learn of a man whose very downfall was due to a woman who enticed him (Judges 16). Samson lost his focus and in fact the bible warns against this in the book of Proverbs.
Proverbs 6:24-26
24. To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26. For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
Proverbs 6:32
32. But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
For the purpose of my post, I believe it would be helpful to deal with this topic on an individual basis, and really try to analyze our intensions, motives and origin of our behaviours.
