the only thing that can kill the vcd is when the prices of DVD writers will go down.
example:
generic Cd capacity 700 mb = 6 pesos
geneirc dvd capacity 4 gig = 6 pesos

same price but you can see the capacity difference is way too big.

pretty much the same prices (especially in CR-king), you can get a blank 4.7GB dvd disc for 10 bucks or even lower, the cheaper CD-r's are sold at prices n0t very different from the dvd's.

You're also forgetting about the DVD players themselves. Most people already have VCD players; they're not willing to move into the DVD format. Most of them are willing to just watch cheap entertainment, regardless of sound or video quality. Cheap VCD players are like P 1,500 - P 2,000, while DVD players are like P 5,000+.

So IMO, people will still stick to VCD for quite some time.

No one knows if Blu-Ray is going to replace DVD. There is a battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD ... pretty much deja vu of the VHS/Betamax face-off.

for home use, I have to convert xvids,divx,mpegs to VCD format para ma play so murag dugay pani mawala even though mawala na ni sa shops...

naa baya dvd player na moplay og avi's na xvids and divx . and what a waste of storage ng vcd's, a 700mb divx movie converted to vcd format needs two cd's.
