Hardware RAID na ang gamit, dili na Software RAID like FreeNAS or equivalent. but for personal and SOHO use, pwede ra kaayo ang desktop HW and SoftRAID for the NAS box...

^ pwede ra 32 bit or 64 bit CPU... naa man sya corresponding 32 bit and 64 bit NAS OS. akoang gamit bro kay Pentium D 925, Deep Cool Alpha 30 cooling system, 4GB ram (2 x2GB) Kingston DDR2 800 MHz, Asus 5KPL-AM mobo, Asus EAHD5450, Intel Gigabit NIC and 2 x 2TB Toshiba (Hitachi HDD)... on Raid1 and a 40GB Samsung HDD... on ZFS volumes... all components were powered by an Antec Earthwatts EA-380D PSU...

ang previous FreeNAS versions kay gaan ug system requirements... did2 sa FreeNAS forum, gi latos ko's programmer sa FreeNAS kay magka "kernel panic" kuno ang akoang set-up tungod kay 4GB ra akoang ram on ZFS pero, in reality, wala... hehehe... satisfied gani ko nya... ang transfer rate lang sa akoang gigabit network ang need pag twiking... akoa nang gi try ug pa access ani nya ang tanan PCs nko diri... results, uber stable sya... pero, gusto ko mo suway ug newer CPU, mobo and a 8GB or 16GB system para ma compare nko if tinuod ba gyud na "inferior" ang 4GB system on FreeNAS version 8.3.0...

kani gyud mga kano, dili gyud mo suway... bahala sila... basta ako, proven and tested nko na stable ang current set-up nko... i'm happy that my "relic HW" had breathed life... plano ko himo lain NAS na oldy tech diri... either AMD Athlon 64 X2 BE-2350 or Intel's Pentium 4 630 or Celeron D360... ang plano nako sa NAS box nila sa balay kay basin Atom or Sempron 210U (both are mini-ITX)... or palitan lang nko to'g lain Intel mini-ITX mobo ang Celeron 420 extra CPU na tua sa balay diay...

headless (monitor-less), DVD drive-less, keyboard-less & mouse-less ang NAS box after the set-up... ang FreeNAS OS kay ad2 i-install sa USB drive... not on the HDD kay exclusive ra nya ang storage sa OS., dili na magamit ug lain...

an update on my electricity bill... bag-o lang gyud ko nag abli sa envelope fro Shanghai Power Grid...

ttttaaadddaaaa... my bill for last month was only 272.30 rmb... roughly 1.8K php... the NAS box was running for overnight on weekdays (from 7:30 pm to 9 am)... then 24 hrs during Sats & Suns (actually, sugod dagan from 7:30 pm Friday night to 9 am Monday morning) together w/ the NAS was the entertainment rig (Celeron G530 w/ XFX 9600GT GPU). identical ni sila'g tinme nba mag dagan kay dungan man nko ug switched "on" & "off"... not to mention ang uban electric appliances nako diri sa balay ug ang mga uban na rigs. on those past days pud, ang heater diri sa balay kay andar pud basta naa ko... kani sya, dako gyud ni'g kaon sa kuryente...

una na bill ani nya kay 303 rmb... roughly 1.95k php...

ok ra 4gb for zfs, but but nas performance is better if its have more memory for cache use, reading from ram is faster than reading from disk. unless im mistaken.

so far bro, sa akoang gamit diri for the 4GB system. ok man gyud kaayo... bisan pa gi dugan nko ug pa access ang tanan PC diri sa balay... wala ra gyud probs... this is based on my personal experience gyud... pero, akoa unya ning ilisan ug ang mobo CPU ug ram nya para comparison... naa man ko extra pa diri...

ang uban, kay nag basa lang na. wla maka 1st hand experience, ang uban na naa'y 1st hand experience na nag problema, basin na wla ma tarong or ma optimize ang HW setting nila... or maybe, "the sun was not shinning on them"... hehehehe... akoa gani, "plug & play" pa ni... even sa NIC. igo ra ko nag ilis sa gigabit Intel NIC sa NAS box then igo ra ko change sa MTU setting sa B-Link gigabit NIC sa entertainment rig... akoang gipa fiesta ug access sa NAS ang tanan rigs... wired & wireless. so far, no probs ra gyud...

pilay read/write sa imo nas ron

the same ra gihapon atong akoang gi post. wala pa man nko ma optimize or ma tweak... share ko sa akoang na observed sa transfer speed nya...na mag access ang single PC or multiple (5 desktops & 1 notebook)... then 2 wireless & 4 wired (3 desktops w/ gigabit NIC and 1 desktop w/ 100 Mbps NIC)...

    > Gaming PC... transfering files from NAS or vice versa... 98 MB/sec... single connection to NAS
    > Entertainment rig... transfering files from NAS or vice versa... mo vary sya... 26.8 to 52 MB/sec... single connection to NAS

if mag multiple connection ko (for testing only) sa tanan PCs... mao ni... dungan sila'g dagan. gi simulate nko na 6 persons ang nagamit sa NAS... don't know if na saturate ba nko ang gigabit link sa pag dagan ani tanan...

    > tansferring a 18.GB files (about 28 individual files) from the NAS to the gaming rig (internal HDD)... on-board gigabit NIC of the Fatality Z77 Pro mobo was utilized... speed kay 28.6 MB/sec...
    > tranferring a 11.3 GB file ( about 13 individual files) from the entertainment rig (external HDD... USB 2)... B-link gigabit NIC to NAS... speed kay 18.2 MB/sec
    > 4 rigs are running HD movies... accessing files from the NAS... no idea ko pila ang bandwidth kada usa nila...

so far, ok ra gyud sya. wala ra nag "kernel panic" as feedback sa programer sa FreeNAS. again, if mag change ko ug HW, nag wonder ko if naa ba'y kalahi-an... akoa unya ning himo-on then share diri... kani diay na testing kay akoang gihimo for 1 week... during the Chinese New Year... wala man ko lingaw diri's balay ato na time kay wla man ko mo uli dha sa Cebu... hehehe... pawala sa kamingaw...

by the way, dili ni maka equal sa mga uber high end component sa FreeNAS box ha kay sort of a living relic ning HW na gamit nko... like sa CPU, mobo, & ram modules... hehehe... ang akoa lang gusto ma share diri na, it doesn't need to have an expensive set of HW for your NAS... your old and abandoned HW can still serve your need as a dedicated NAS box (headless files server)

@ts, sir pwede ba ni ang freenas ug torrent offlinedownloading ug offline seeding? Ty

  10. #140
pwede ra install-lan ug torrent plug-on ang FreeNAS... what do you mean by "offline"... stand alone pasabot nimo? if stand-alone, yes, kay naa man plug-ins. ad2 lang ka's browser ma control nya. pero, dapat naka "online" ka's internet... hehehe... wla pa ko naka suway ani bro. kay ang entertainment rig ra man nko ang mag download ug 24/7. ang ad2 lang nako i-store sa FreeNAS after ma download... manual transfer lang nako...
