I'm wondering if anyone is interested to develop a specific breed for Cebu. This is what I am trying to do with my one and only mix breed. She's so beautiful and unique (although we all always feel that our dogs are unique no matter what). Many breeds were "mix breeds" or mutts to begin with until somebody chose to develop it and study its behavior and inclinations. It would be great if we contribute a breed develop for Cebu or the Visayas. China has "Chinese Crested", Shihtzu, ChowChow, Pekingese, and many more, Cuba has Havanese, even Madagascar has Coton de Tulear, and so on and so on. I actually don't like to refer to my mixbreed as "aspin" coz it only refers to all kinds of mixbreeds in the Philippines. I call my mixbreed, Cebu Bichon mainly because she looks like a Bichon. Bichon may be a French word but my dog resembles a similarity with Bichon Frise because of it's Poodle & Shihtzu combined feature (it's not a Shi-Poo also since its body shape is like a Jack Russel - also is very agile and alert like a Jack Russel). I would have liked it if there's a clinic that can do DNA testing to trace the roots of my mixed breed. I'd like to refer to my Mixbreed as a "DESIGNER BREED". Any thoughts?

Oh, I'm sorry - I thought ASPIN means Mixed Breeds, is it or is it not?

AsPins are Mongrels miss/sir...technically they are mix breed but usually of an unknown breed

if you know the lineage of breeds that made up your pup/dog...i dont think it can be counted as one...as you said...it's a "designer breed"...

Well, I don't really know the lineage of my mixed breed - I was only making an educated guess based on my research of different dog breeds. This is exactly my point for my wish list of a clinic or lab in Cebu that could do DNA testing to identify the lineage of my dog. We don't have that capability here in the Philippines.

With all due respect, my dog won the best Aspin award in a fun dog show - unless those judges were totally ignorant about dogs, they wouldn't categorized my dog as "ASPIN". However, speaking of ASPIN - not all "mongrels" or "mixed breed of unknown origins" are the same - I guess it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. What I'm saying is, it would be nice if "ASPIN" owners who are planning to breed would attempt to "develop a new breed" instead of just breeding for the sake of having more ASPIN dogs. Why not contribute something to the global encyclopedia of dog breeds since the Philippines hasn't contributed a single one at all.

There are many AKC recognized dog breeds that do not have a known origin such as the Havanese, Coton de Tulear, the Whippet and yet these dogs were bred and developed over the years where their varying temperaments, features, etc were monitored and documented. The Havanese was discovered in Cuba and somebody from Cuba decided to develop the breed, and same goes for Coton de Tulear and Whippet (among many other dog breeds).

@Randy: Looking at the photo of your "whitey" dog, it doesn't look like a mongrel - it looks like a cross between spitz, jack russell and probably mini pin for it to maintain a small size (that is if that's the adult size). This guess changes once I know more its temperament, inclinations, etc. In the end, it doesn't matter what its origin is but it does matter to know what triggers your dog, what your dog's weakness is, what it's inclination is. Btw, a Jack Russell looks like a typical mongrel but that's an AKC recognized breed.

Perhaps our mongrels originated from something else too- who knows? wouldn't you want to find out? wouldn't it be fun to find out? if not, then what's the purpose of this thread? Dogs pre-dates human civilization- so who are we to say that such a particular dog is native or original or unique to a specific land and it can't be named or be inspired from other dog breeds etc. What I'm saying is, BREEDS exist because human beings developed them to be so.

Dogs can be developed for a particular purpose. I have an ASPIN but I don't like my dog to be referred to or merely categorized as just an "ASPIN". That's just me. I am responding to this thread because the person who started this wanted to give due recognition to his "ASPIN/S". My guess is, he doesn't want his ASPIN to be discriminated against other purebreds. I'm merely supporting that and elevating the conversation about ASPINS in to something more. We cannot register our ASPIN dogs if we can't identify what qualifies as an ASPIN. does ASPIN means hairless? coz Randy, your dog is not hairless. So what is an ASPIN? if you can start identifying what an ASPIN is in a more consistent manner, aren't you in effect identifying a "specific breed"?

This is my Cebuchon (Cebu Bichon)

This was she when she was 6 weeks old (she looked like some sort of terrier then with triangle drooping ears):

When she was about 3 months old: - she grew some hair and started to look like a Bichon.

When she was about 10 months old (before grooming):

When she was 1 year and 2 months (groomed, ears still triangle but shaped like a poodle, hair as grainy as a shihtzu): https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...12032420_n.jpg, - Front chest similar with a Jack Russell:

Body shape and arch similar with a Jack Russell (10 to 15" in height) with bony broad chest (unlike a Shihtzu and a Poodle):

This is an image of a hairy Jack Russel:

So I don't really know if my educated guess is correct. The dominant physical features is a mix of Poodle and Shihtzu but the body built is like a Jack Russel (I thought at first that it could be Japanese Spitz or Pomeranian because of the high arch). It only occurred later when my shooter introduced me to the possibility of a Jack Russell since my Cebuchon is very agile & alert - and the shape of her face if you look closely resembles a similar shape of a hairy Jack Russell.
