US to install radar and communications system to avoid collisions in Tubbataha

MANILA, Feb. 3 –- The U.S. government, whose naval vessel ran aground in the Tubbataha Reef last month, has offered to improve the existing ranger station in the area by providing radar and communications system to prevent collisions and thwart marine poachers.

In a statement on Sunday, the U.S. Embassy unveiled several restoration and conservation measures it plans to undertake on the reef following damage wrought by the USS Guardian accident on Jan. 17.

“The U.S. government will offer to fund a site survey for proposed improvements to the existing ranger station on Tubbataha Reef. Proposals could include the installation of radar and communications equipment that can assist Park Rangers and Philippine Coast Guard in avoiding collisions and keeping tabs on marine poachers,” the embassy said.

The U.S. said it will share hydrographic survey data with the Philippines National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA).

A U.S. interdisciplinary scientific team is also being formed to initiate discussions with the Philippine government to review coral reef rehabilitation options in Tubbataha, based on assessments by Philippine-based marine scientists.

In the next two weeks, the U.S. embassy will organize a roundtable discussion with local coral reef conservation experts to listen to concerns and discuss options for conservation and restoration of the Tubbataha Reef.

To support coral restoration research at Tubbataha Reef, a P 4.1-million grant or about $ 100,000 will be given to a Philippine university.(PNA)

Kung imu tan-awon ang mga pictures kantilado ang reef so downward looking fathometer is useless, so are the Sonars, and their electronic charts are off by 8 miles...

Sa mga ga ask ga unsa ang guardian dd2,
It was on it's way to Puerto Princessa for a port visit... MCM (Mine Counter Measure) ship usually work alone and ahead of a battlegroup...

And for those naga ingun na gituyo ug pasadsad sa USS Guardian... For Christ's sake that's a quarter of a billion dollar ship nya tuyuon ra ug pasadsad, and the US Navy is not that crazy na tuyuon ug bangga ang in-ana ka mahal na barko...
