A Canadian national shot dead two people before he himself was killed in an incident at the Cebu City court Tuesday morning.
The foreign national, initially identified as John Pope, started shooting at the Palace of Justice behind the provincial capitol, radio dzRH reported.
Pope was facing five counts of malicious mischief before the court at the time, the report said.
It was not immediately clear how Pope died. An initial report said Pope was gunned down by police fire but an updated account said he shot himself when surrounded by police.
One of his victims was described as a lawyer, who was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, the report said. The second was one Dr. Rene Rafols, supposedly a complainant in one of the malicious mischief cases filed against Pope.
A separate dzRH report said Pope also shot a third victim identified as prosecutor Maria Casiño.
Police were quoted in the report as saying the foreign national used a cal-.38 handgun.
Initial investigation showed Pope was on his way to Branch 6 of the trial court to attend a hearing at 8 a.m.
Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Scene of the Crime Operations (SOCO) operatives cordoned off the area.
Investigators are looking into how Pope got into the court with his firearm.
Tuesday's incident occurred amid an election gun ban where permits to carry firearms outside residence are suspended until June 12.
It also drew comparisons to a shooting incident in Cavite last Jan. 4, where Ronald Bae went on a shooting spree and killed seven people and wounded 11 others before he himself was gunned down by responding policeman.
