Skycable realigns channel assignments
By Jessica S. Losorata
SKY Cable has reorganized its channel assignments and launched six new full high-definition (HD) channels last Tuesday.
The channel lineup was first implemented in Davao last September with a simultaneous rollout in the same month in Bacolod, Iloilo and Baguio. Its introduction in Cebu on Dec. 3 completed the regional implementation. Officials said the system will start in Metro Manila in the second half of 2013.
According to Sky Cable Corporation regional marketing head Gidgette Faustino, it took
them a while to implement the channel realignment into a system that has already been implemented in most advanced countries.
Sky Cable, being the first pay TV provider to use the system, is optimistic the reassignment will provide better and more convenient viewing experience.
The channel assignment is genre-based and in increments of 100. Assignments are 001-099 for local, 101-199 for kids, 201-299 for education and learning, 301-399 for sports and men, 401-499 for movies, 501-599 for news, 601-699 for entertainment and lifestyle, 701-799 for high definition, 801-899 for international and 901-999 for religious channels.
Faustino clarified there was no channel deletion with the realignment.
She said the system gives options to subscribers as most of them are not subscribed to all channels. With it, they will be aware of other channels, prompting them to upgrade.
Sky Cable has more than half a million subscribers in the Philippines, with Metro Manila and Cebu as the biggest single and regional markets, respectively.
Basic Skycable plans are 280, 399 and 499. Silver, Gold and Edge subscriptions are also available. Ala carte channels or mini-packs are offered for as low as P20 a month
