It's been bad for the past few decades or so. However, people have been going to bookstores and reading again. Thanks to young adult books such as Harry Potter, A Series of Unfotunate Events and other speculative fiction titles and yes, even adults have been going back to reading with local authors such as Bob Ong and the author of Twisted (whose name escapes me at this moment.

In the local scene, filipino authors such as Dean Alfar and the LitCritters have been actively seducing people into reading and even writing by talking to different schools and literary organizations. In Cebu, Bathalad has been promoting the local language through poetry.

To say that filipinos are not fond of reading books is a false statement. Why do you think second hand bookstores proliferate and even prosper in Cebu? Why do you think that trade bookstores such as Cagnaan have been expanding through the years? Why do you think National Bookstore has been around for so long?

It is quite pretentious to say that watching Apprentice will actually make you wiser over soap opera. Whether we admit it or not, both Apprentice and Bakekang are on your tube to keep you stuck on the tube. They're there to entertain, on different levels. But still, did you actually think that The Apprentice producers actually had education in mind?

Your foreigner friend has either not studied his market well or have been talking to the wrong people.

i dont think the problem is with the educational system per se, but its more of the management and the substandard performance of the teachers in school and the lack of student's interest and motivation in school. many people have succeeded with the same educational system.

What’s the plan for the college-unfit graduates?

    The Philippine Star 04/04/2007

As all high schools throughout the country have expectedly completed their graduation rites prior to the Holy Week, a group of educators called the attention of the Department of Education to the plight of the new graduates who were rated as "unfit for college education".

"So, they found out through the National Career Assessment Examination that hundreds of thousands of our new graduates were not fit to pursue college education, now what?" asked partylist group, A TEACHER.

The DepEd earlier released the NCAE results which showed that more than half of the 1.3 million students in the country’s public and private high schools are unfit for college, with just 49,066 or 3.76 percent having "high aptitude" for university schooling, 478,909 or 36.69% had "moderate aptitude," and the rest had "low aptitude" and were rated as likely to fail university. The department said the test sought to assess the students in general scholastics, entrepreneurial skills and non-verbal ability.

ok man ang quality of education in private schools but only few can afford their exorbitant tuition fees... that's why most parents have no choice but to send their kids to public schools where the quality is really not that good...

the only problem with the system is the proper implementation of reforms and improvements. I have been teaching for years here and abroad, pero mas bright ato mga students diri. Choice sa bata, though monetary problem is sometimes a cause, ang moskuela ba siya or dili unlike sa US nga mandatory. Mao klaro mas daku ko ug garbo sa makahuman, especially those graduates from public schools.

Wala pa jud support ang government. When I was in public school before, ako gasto tanan, from the kids papers and project. Bisan tanan gamit sa school usahay, from chalk to computer. Then hambog kaayo si Gloria nga 70% na daw sa public schools naa computer laboratories! Is she dreaming?

Our educational system is in very bad situation. Only the "can afford ones" ang maka eskwela sa mga nindot nga eskwelahan. Ang mga pobre adto ra nangita ug garbage, nag rugby ug nanglimos along the road. Luoy ang mga pinoy sa future kay wala jud ta tarong nga educational system. Puro mga trash ang naa sa government, that's why.
