Abad clinches World Duathlon berth with Top 3 finish
Davao City native Mirasol Abad did the country proud with a podium finish in Sunday’s Century Tuna- Asian Triathlon Confederation Asian Duathlon Championship inside the sprawling Subic Bay Freeport here, finishing third behind two elite Japanese duathletes, one of them a two-time Olympian.
But more important than her third-place medal was Abad’s qualification in the World Duathlon Championship in Colombia in July of next year as the Top 5 Asian duathletes here earned slots in the world games.
The 27-year-old Abad surprised the lead pack of Japanese duathletes as she kept pace with them in the 40K bike leg and the final 5K run and was running second to eventual champion Olympian Ai Ueda, when she was overtaken by her foe’s compatriot Eri Miyazawa in the final 150 meters.
Abad, who is with the Philippine Air Force, clocked 2:01.57 behind Ueda’s 2:00.55 and Miyazawa, who negotiated the 10K run-40K bike-5K run race in 2:01.41.
“Hard training lang talaga, hahabulin ko pa sana sa finish pero baka hundi naman ako tumapos kung sasabayan ko siya. Masaya na ako dahil Top 5 ang target ko,” said Abad after the race backed by SBMA, the Philippine Sports Commission, Fitness First, Standard Insurance, Gatorade, and Asian Center for Insulation.
Triathlon Association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco promised to provide the necessary training for Abad in preparation for the World Duathlon Championship.
