Nikon D80 or Canon 400D. Then invest in Lens. Just research on what camera you intend to buy. If you're getting a dslr, you're not just purchasing the camera, but the system. Canon and Nikon both are wonderful camera brands, each with its pros and cons.

If you're planning to go serious about photography later on, I suggest start from Film (SLR or Compact) so you will learn how not to be trigger happy and concentrate more on composition. If you master that, then go digital and enjoy. My $0.2

there are really a lot of factors to consider in choosing camera to buy...

since your just starting out & still learning photography, i suggest a P&S camera than dslr.. its a lot less expensive than dslr (but if you can afford dlrs then go for it!). for just a few thousand of pesos you can get yourself a nice p&s which can already help you learn about photgraphy. since you want to learn, I suggest you chose a camera with manual control (lots of it)

Find a camera you can grow with as your skills develop rather than a camera you can grow out of.

uhm, i do actually have the point and shoot camera but I am aiming to have the Nikon D40. I have checked the specs at dpreview.com and it's quite good for an amateur like me. Of course, it is less expensive than those sophisticated DSLRs (sony alpha, canon eos 400D...)

Honestly, i still need to learn all the different termilogies of Photography.

Well if you have your eyes aimed on the Nikon D40, then by all means go for it. It's an entry level Nikon with some features that are comparable to more expensive DSLRs. It will surely be a lean but mean tool for a beginner.

Terminologies and basics about photography, you can always research in the internet. the most important thing is to get a DSLR and start practicing. you'll never really get the feel of what is being taught in those Photography 101 lessons if what you have in your hand is a point and shoot.

if you want, you can also join a club where even newbies are welcome...like Istorya.net Photo Club. You sure will learn a lot, and faster too, if you're with a group.

i have tried nikon d40 once ... the first time i've use it... i can say it's a full-featured, fun-to-use little camera
and the price is on the neighborhood of P&S cameras.

i have canon 30D and 400D. if i'm starting from scratch, i'll go with nikon d40.

if you'll planning to shoot for a living, then it's a different thing.



if your decision will be base on budget,

for $1.3K, go with Nikon D80, then add flash(SB-800), their wireless i-ttl rocks. for canon to have this feature, you have to buy ST-E2 and a flash or a single 580EX and another canon flash.

and their kit lens is far better than the canon ones.
