Default Re: The Lost Tomb of Jesus: discovery channel documentary

here is the story I was talking about in my previous post. just wanted to share this lang.

Scholar: 'Jesus Tomb' documentary got it wrong

JERUSALEM (AP) -- A prominent scholar looking into the factual basis of a popular but widely criticized documentary film that claims to have located the tomb of Jesus said Tuesday that a crucial piece of evidence filmmakers used to support their claim is a mistake.

Stephen Pfann, a textual scholar and paleographer at the University of the Holy Land in Jerusalem, said he has released a paper claiming the makers of "The Lost Tomb of Jesus" were mistaken when they identified an ancient ossuary from the cave as belonging to the New Testament's Mary Magdalene.

Produced by Oscar-winning director James Cameron and directed by Simcha Jacobovici, the documentary has drawn intense media coverage for its claims challenging accepted Christian dogma.

Despite widespread ridicule from scholars, it drew more than 4 million viewers when it aired on the Discovery Channel on March 4. A companion book, "The Jesus Family Tomb," has rocketed to sixth place on the New York Times nonfiction best-seller list.

The film and book suggest that a first-century ossuary found in a south Jerusalem cave in 1980 contained the remains of Jesus, contradicting the Christian belief that he was resurrected and ascended to heaven. Ossuaries are stone boxes used at the time to store the bones of the dead.

The filmmakers also suggest that Mary Magdalene was buried in the tomb, that she and Jesus were married, and that an ossuary labeled "Judah son of Jesus" belonged to their son.

The scholars who analyzed the Greek inscription on one of the ossuaries after its discovery read it as "Mariamene e Mara," meaning "Mary the teacher" or "Mary the master."

Before the movie was screened, Jacobovici said that particular inscription provided crucial support for his claim. The name Mariamene is rare, and in some early Christian texts it is believed to refer to Mary Magdalene.

But having analyzed the inscription, Pfann, who made a brief appearance in the film as an ossuary expert, published a detailed article on his university's Web site asserting that it doesn't read "Mariamene" at all.

The inscription, Pfann said, is made up of two names inscribed by two different hands: the first, "Mariame," was inscribed in a formal Greek script, and later, when the bones of another woman were added to the box, another scribe using a different cursive script added the words "kai Mara," meaning "and Mara." Mara is a different form of the name Martha.

According to Pfann's reading, the ossuary did not house the bones of "Mary the teacher," but rather of two women, "Mary and Martha."

"In view of the above, there is no longer any reason to be tempted to link this ossuary...to Mary Magdalene or any other person in Biblical, non-Biblical or church tradition," Pfann wrote.

In the interest of telling a good story, Pfann said, the documentary engaged in some "fudging" of the facts.

"James Cameron is a great guru of science fiction, and he's taking it to a new level with Simcha Jacobovici. You take a little bit of science, spin a good yarn out of it and you get another Terminator or Life of Brian," Pfann said.

In Israel Tuesday for a screening of the film, the Toronto-based Jacobovici welcomed Pfann's criticism, saying "every inscription should be re-examined."

But Jacobovici said scholars who researched the ossuary in the past agreed with the film's reading. "Anyone who looks at it can see that the script was written by the same hand," Jacobovici said.

Jacobovici has faced criticism much tougher than Pfann's academic critique. The film has been termed "archeo-porn," and Jacobovici has been accused of "pimping the Bible."

Jacobovici attributes most of the criticism to scholars' discomfort with journalists "casting light into their ossuary monopoly."

"What we're doing is democratizing this knowledge, and this is driving some people crazy," Jacobovici said.

    mao! heheheh...

I'll just try and answer these querries for his satisfaction in shortest as possible....

    ...you believe them?
No. I don't believe in any of them but my stand is that I have my own faith.

    who are these sects?
Haven't heard of these groups before?

mormons? wen are they founded? by god?
Almost the same as prostestants... they've been around longer than any "new" congregations.

Islam? u know u started it? have you read salman rashdey's book?
If you read few chapter of Qur'an you will notice the acceptance of christ as a prophet.
You mean Salman Rushdie. Ahhh... the fiction author... he's the same as Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. I read his book Satanic Verses that muslims hated him for that. Dan Brown was also criticized by catholic church (vatican) for writing such book. Salman's first book was GRIMUS was part science fiction and tale... was never a big hit because of literacy critics. The book satanic verses was perceived as an irreverent depiction of the prophet Muhammad. Banned largely with muslim community. The book is all in all a fictional standpoint - Dan Brown is also the same. I like reading these kind of people because they have sense of urgency and preciseness although... writing a book is not as accurate as any readers imagine.

Jews? believers of the old first five books? u know pentateuch? have read them from page one till end?
True they are believers of old first 5 books. let's go back from where they started these. Genesis, Exudos, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy were Abraham and Moses followed on when they were delivering people out of slavery. Pentateuch as in Five Rolls or Cases is a greek name... Penta or pente means Five, Teuxos (or close to that) means a Case or Cases or should I saw containing the reference of 5 scrolls of Law of Moses. Interestingly, the pentateuch belieive was written by Moses, hence Genesis is sometimes called the first book of Moses. Each successive book of the Pentateuch picks up and continues the story of the previous book to form a continuous story. Hence Genesis tells how the Israelites went to Egypt while Exodus tells how they came to leave Egypt. Exodus describes the building of the tabernacle at Sinai while in Leviticus Moses is given rules while at Sinai for offering sacrifice and worship at that tabernacle. In Numbers the Israelites leave Sinai and travel eventually to the plains of Moab, while in Deuteronomy Moses gives speeches about the law on the plains of Moab. Now, you asked me if I read all the pages... NO, why, It's all stories to me. That satisfy questions?

let me ask you? how much have you read?
More than enough brod! would I comment such things if I don't know what am I doing? However, if the question is a slunt disgust, then you need to read more also because your mind is capable of absorbing immeasurable information. If not, then my apologies.

wer did the other christian sect get there references? do they also have the copies of the dead sea scrolls?
they get their references from the translation of the ancient christian scholars who believe JESUS is a GOD.

NO! The scrolls were pieces of extinct history and maybe it will answer some of the questions that humans are longing for but the scrolls are also depicted as treasure map or people - imean archeologists perceived as a great find of history pieces. No one knows what the Dead Sea Scrolls actually telling us... that's why it's been displayed in the museum in Amman. There can be more than scrolls in the Dead Sea but they might be torn into pieces because of salt content - as added info, the second saltiest body of water on earth that of Lake Asal in Africa.
Dead Sea Scrolls was in connection with Jesus was a God? I beg to differ brod, these are all theories that was written on or before JC... it was sritten in old hebrew text... similar to the egyptian Hieroglyphics and probably because they are frequently described as important to the history of the Bible, the scrolls are surrounded by a wide range of conspiracy theories. There is also writing about the Nephilim related to the Book of Enoch. Other theories with more support among scholars include Qumran as a military fortress or a winter resort And do you know who were the people strongly wanted it? Isreal.

let me ask you again.are they ( who do not believe JESUS is GOD ) tells the truth?
You make me sniff a bit there brod. Okay these religious/group sect or whatever you call them have their own beliefs... if they don't believe JC was a God or son of God then it's their own. That's truthflly their understanding. Would Buddhist Monks believe in JC? NO. Would Communism believe in JC? NO. Would Islam believe in JC as Son of God? NO. Let me tell you, if you think you believe in JC as God or Son of God, then keep it as your own belief and faith because these sects don't need to be reminded as such. Did I answered that clearly?

in the begining en god created man..HE is mentioned as the GOD of MOISES, JACOB and ISAAC.. and mentioned by prophet ISAIAH as GOD of my FATHERS who is to come in to this world and offer salvation thru the forgiveness of sins.
I don't really get this wuestion... who was mentioned as the God of Moses... ? The man created by God? or JC? ISAIAH said that GOD OF MY FATHERS, he didn't mention MY GOD! why because he was also a prophet... the book of mormons mentioned this too. Adding more confusion di ba?

I think I answered this too long... sorry mga folks... any questions butitoy, email me or PM me if you like.

If you save someone from getting killed then you are a SAVIOR!

    Prophet
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In religion, a prophet (or prophetess) is a person who has directly encountered the numinous and serves as an intermediary with humanity for the divine.
If you claim you can do this then for you, you are a prophet. If you have followers and they think you can do this then to them you are their prophet. If you save anyone from getting killed then you are a savior.

A dead man cannot be a savior.

Hinuon, para nako Jesus Christ is God/Son of God/Divine. In His human form, a Prophet.

i think the best way to get your answer for this kind of question is to study the bible and consult some experts(theologians). Then after that seek yourself honestly "Is jesus a prophet or savior" whatever answer you might came up then hold on to it.

no need for others to tell you what you need to believe.

I agree with you... but with all the posts and forruners, it's a personal opinion not to be taken as a source of commitment but a resource of understanding other views.
