There are about 12.5 m ofw ( wa pa nahisgot kung apil ang undocumented ofws ana nila). So if ibalik na nimo tanan or even half of them, the unemployment rate would probably go up again? It would surpass the US. Unless there are available jobs for our seafearers, nurses, mining engineers, etc..

^Sakto bai..the thread just said it, yet it was also mentioned that we are only second to china in growth. This is exactly the reason why i cant be proud sa balita. Because, if apil ang unemployment rate sa indicators then mao nay reason i asked you where to classify the 12.5m ofws (employed or unemployed?)... Dont get me wrong bai, the govt should be very proud with this news , but i agree with aerlo with this, kinsa mang admin ang dapat moclaim ani? Kang pnoy? Or the past admins nga nagpush sa mga ofw outside the country?

I could be wrong, i never claimed to be an economist and my resources are limited. who knows, 12.5m could be our highest number of ofw, the same time this news came out.I have seen a lot of my friends leaving the country for work outside more today that the previous years.

The issue with pinoys leaving the country if jobs are already available is totally a different issue. It is yet to be seen. Nationalism is totally a different issue but interesting to tackle too.

In economics, everything is offset in years. Nothing in economy is instantaneous, unless we're talking about economic stimulus. This is especially true in fiscal terms of a country--varying by the size of a country. Sure it's good that economic indicators seems favorable for our country, but could we actually say a certain administration deserves the praise? It would take at least another about another decade to figure that out. And right now, that's one of the last priorities as it is important to capitalize on the margins first.

It will take the same number of years for some people to understand your point of view. They would much rather bask in the sunshine news of today than critically think and analyze the whole picture and assess whether this can be sustained in the long run. Take the case of straightening up tax collection. How many were publicly embarrassed as tax cheats? And how has the prosecution of these people gone? When the charges were filed, it seemed like good news. But reading the dismissal rate is depressing (Nearly half of tax evasion cases filed by BIR dismissed for lack of evidence - InterAksyon.com). The same goes for their biggest fish that now after two and a half years of trying, still no conviction, but sure lots of publicity: (Corruption Raps Against GMA Dropped | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online)

And for those who think the unemployment/underemployment rate can be compared with other countries? Think again. Look at underemployment: in the case of the Phl is 22.7%! compare this with the US's 8.6% (U.S. Unemployment Rate Rises, Underemployment Falling — Gallup - 24/7 Wall St.) how do we fare? And then there is the per capita, which is conveniently ignored in the comparisons. And that's not even looking at the minimum wages, which drives our workers to sacrifice family for better pay abroad. What happens to the GDP if the remittances of OFWs is removed from the equation? Will the picture be as rosy?

It is not at all difficult to acknowledge the improvements under the present administration. But on the economic viewpoint, it's just too early to party. But let's not stop them if they feel that way and be killjoys. After all, these are just opinions. This is all mind over matter. I don't mind and they don't matter.

This is what aarlo means that it takes years before results are seen when it comes to economic decisions. GMA was heavily criticized for the decisions to service foreign and local debts back then. But who's reaping the laurels now?

You have to be a little more specific lest you be accused of negativism. The report refers only to the plausible increase in credit rating by 2013. The same report implies references to debt management beginning 2004. As for the GDP, well, that is a bit more complicated as far as credit to whom is concerned. But it's a positive news and should be complemented with more programs for it to be sustained.

kinsay mu claim? the answer is nobody. And ang resulta, it becomes election fodder for allies to the administration without it being explicitly so, when we aren't even sure if PNoy's fiscal management is the reason why the economic indicators is currently favorable. The consequences of a decision made fiscally is not evident right away. Suma, when one invests (in terms of finance and economy) does one expect gains immediately?

After decades of reliance on remittances and the business process outsourcing sector, the Philippines may be on the brink of a manufacturing “renaissance” that can add a leg to its structural growth story, according to German financial giant Deutsche Bank.
In a report titled “Manufacturing: A New Growth Driver” issued last week, the bank said it remained “structurally bullish” on the Philippine economy specially as the investment cycle “seems to have turned sustainably upward.” While most bets are on the government’s public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure to be the linchpin of an investment-led growth, the research paper raised the possibility that manufacturing—which remained “under the radar” despite an evidence of a surge since 2010—could be a key driver as well.
As a share of gross domestic product, industry peaked at 43 percent in the early 1980s falling to 31 percent in the first semester of 2012—a low level not seen since the 1950s, the report noted. On the other hand, services fueled by remittances and BPOs contributed nearly 60 percent, in turn driving consumption higher.
“But evidence points to a nascent surge in the manufacturing sector—a renaissance of sorts. More startling, the growth seems to be coming from the export sector. In fact, an objective reading of the data suggests the rebound has been happening for at least two years now,” said the September 24 research authored by analysts Rafael Garchitorena, Carissa Manhubat and Iza Fernandez.
Deutsche Bank pointed out that loan growth, electricity and water usage and even exports have consistently shown strong industrial growths since 2010. It also favorably noted that investment commitments in export zones hit new all-time highs in 2011, suggesting further demand growth as the plants are completed.
“And the breadth of industries is impressive. Makers of everything from tires, chemicals, capacitors, printers, toys, lenses, boats, ignition wire harnesses and airline galleys are expanding capacity,” the research said.
It was often argued in the past that high labor and power costs and poor infrastructure were making the country uncompetitive in manufacturing, thus skewing the economy toward services.
According to Deutsche Bank, labor costs have been “remarkably stable” in the Philippines, with minimum wage growth of just 5 percent annually in the last decade compared to the sharp increases in Thailand and China wages, making the English-speaking Filipino worker “much more competitive by default.” It said the recent 40-percent increase in Thai wages, for example, had brought the premium of Metro Manila wages (at about $10.68 a day) over Bangkok (at about $9.72 a day) to just 10 percent. Bangkok and Shanghai minimum wages are now about the same as, or more expensive than, in areas just outside Manila.

Notice that Deutsche Bank notes surge since 2010, well within the term of the current administration. They should focus on this and also highlight it like they do the other positive economic data. More incentives should be given to those who would invest in manufacturing facilities/companies. They are capital intensive and with the right government support, investors can be lured into this industry. Perhaps dumping the 60/40 thing and allowing 100% ownership?
