Even as he fends off accusations of plagiarism, Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto III on Thursday denied that he proposed or was otherwise pushing for an "anti-blogging" bill.
"Di ko alam san nila nakuha [yun] inimbento na naman nila yun, [they're] putting words into my mouth," Sotto told reporters during a weekly forum at the Senate on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Sotto delivered a privilege speech wherein he decried as "cyberbullying" the flak he has suffered via social media for allegedly plagiarizing a US-based blogger in his speech against the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill.
Bill vs online plagiarism
After Sotto delivered his speech on Wednesday, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile suggested the crafting of a bill to address plagiarism issues online.
"Siguro marahil para maliwanagan ito at magkaroon na itong patakaran o reglamento na susundin ng lahat ay magpanukala tayo ng batas at ilagay natin dun kung ano ang mga karapatan ng mga may blogs para sa ganun ay maliwanag para di na ito mangyayari," said Enrile.
Sotto supported Enrile's suggestion and the matter was referred to the Senate committees on public information and mass media and science and technology.
Netizens, however, interpreted the proposed measure as an "anti-blogging" bill.
"Kailan ko sinabi sa speech ko yun? Wala ako sinabi na ganun sa speech ko," said Sotto.
"Nag-iimbento sila at tsaka wala sila ginawa kundi umatake lang," he added.
Sotto unaffected
Sotto, however, said that he was unaffected by the supposed "demolition job" against him.
"I've been through worse, di ko dinadamdam ito. As long as I feel and know that the 'Jewish carpenter' is backing me up, I will fight it just like the way I fought the drug lords and the issue of dangerous drugs," he said.
The senator said he will deliver the last part of his Turno En Contra next week. — TJD, GMA News
